for any members  - I need a loco and tender for my new 0-27 layout below.

Can pay a little for the  loco.     I just bought 3 shorty Lionel Pass cars from Trainworld.

I'm starting my last small layout in my apartment as a present to myself for my 80th Birthday.

Hey Larry, Bob Severin here.  I have some stuff you might like.  Are you soliciting for a birthday present, or, looking to buy?  Just wondering.  I have two PW Lionel steamers with whistle tenders.  I also have a nice grouping of Lionel Lines freight cars.  Email me and let me know what your thoughts are.  I think shipping may be our most difficult obstacle to overcome.

If you're looking for conventional, I don't think you can go wrong with Williams/Williams by Bachmann. No frills, including no steam or diesel sounds, just a bell and whistle/horn.  Every one I've purchased has run well. I have 2 of their NW-2 switchers and 5 of their O27 steam engines.  I like their 4-6-0 Ten Wheeler best and have even thought about getting another, the nicely colored C&O.  It is geared really well. It's also a bit smaller and looks fine on 27" curves.

I don't own any other W/WBB diesels, but for your size layout, I'd go with the smaller FAs over the F3s. They look more at home on 27" curves.

If you want to pay a little more, then I'd recommend either MTH RailKing or Lionel LionChief Plus. These will bring you handheld command control, sounds, and some other niceties.

In any of these cases, make sure they're rated for 27" curves, not 31".

I'm looking at the Williams 4-6-0 set.with cars and transformer.  Thanks

You can't really go wrong with the Williams 4-6-0. I think that is, hands down, the best running conventional engine on the market today.

I agree. At first, I thought mine was defective precisely because it actually ran the way a steam engine should. No jack rabbit start, doesn't travel at 100 scale mph, etc.  It was such a departure from the mass that won't budge until you get the transformer up to 14-16V and then take off like a dog chasing a mailman.
