When I saw the title of the thread, I immediately pictured bowling alleys (that's what they were called before lanes). I was going to refer you to Wood who has a 1 to 1 and the model.

 

Anyway, nice thread and photos, Frank.

All alleys are interesting.

They are for service, some cases for access to other entrance, meters, trash, etc.

a humid dark place, mostly with smell of cocking (residential) and mysteriously striking.

You did a nice representation, Frank!

Entire modules are modeled the way one would see it riding in trains.

My small layout has multiple alleys. Much more fun to model than a street, and it seems most train track is on the backside of buildings in real life, which is where the alley is.

Frank, you really know how to "dress" up an alley. Nicely done and thanks for the thread.

I have often thought about allies for my out and yet to be built lay-outs as well as seeing the back side of buildings that would be in the same block but facing the next street back. To save space I didn't have them. Most modules I see are made to view from one side (the front) One thing I liked about the Flower City module group theirs seemed to be built to be viewed from both sides. One thing that bothered one of my moduler train buddies was most module groups don't cover up the back space under their modules and that became an eye sure plus an attraction for stealing. Sorry I went off on another rabbit trail.

 

The allies presented here are first rate, thanks for the inspiration.

I do not have any alleys yet.  Heck, I've barely got any buildings .  But I do have a seedy back yard planned for a seedy hotel that overlooks the tracks.  As the locomotive passes the back of the hotel and its headlight sweeps the sordid building, who knows what the engineer and fireman will see?

I have never created a scene that was not fully fleshed-out in all directions. It wouldn't even occur to me to do just a front.

Your work is so good and realistic, wish I could see the the possibilities  like you. By the way where did your old time figures come from? I would like to put a drive in movie complex on the lay-out but for it to be used during the daytime for a classic car show and have some of the car owners in 20's-40's dress. The thought is in the dark with a movie showing people will not be drawn to the fact the age of the cars.

Here is a view of an alleyway, unrefined as yet at the time of the photo, but a place I allowed myself plenty of room to develop places and details behind the front-streets. I like visitors to have to work a little to catch a view of everything.
