The Boiler-Equipped GP30B's made a few trips on the Butte Special.  The Spokane passenger train might have had them for a few trips also.  These units were purchased when the future of passenger service was uncertain and the older E-units were beginning to become long in the tooth.  As it turned out, UP had enough E8 and E9 units to handle almost all passenger assignments after the E7's were retired, until Amtrak Day.

I have read the GP30B had steam generators.  Is that true?

Not all of them.

Also, there are no dashes in EMD model designations, i.e. between the type and the model number series. For example: F7, E8, GP7, GP9, GP30, SD35, SD45, SD50, etc., etc, etc..

What about the GP-39-2? Did EMD make that model as well? Reading Lines had about 20 GP-39-2's.

Again,,,,,,,there is NO DASH in the EMC/EMD locomotive model designations, between the type of unit, and the series number of unit. Thus, "GP-39-2" was actually GP39-2, no matter what customer purchased them.
