I have a postwar style layout with fastrack and i was considering going back to tubular.  I was wondering if anyone else has actually done this or if I am crazy for going to traditional.  Someone (on the forum) gave me a ton of track and switches and I was thinking about doing it this week.

First, let me say I love Fastrack.

Now then, since I mostly do layouts in the old style "dealer display" tradition with all manner of accessories, I decided to go back to tubular track.  It finishes off the look I like with my trains.

I already owned a ton of it that I boxed up when I went to a new layout using Fastrack.

So, count me as one who went back to tubular.

As an aside, even with Fastrack, let me just say, don't be afraid of a saw, Dremel or otherwise.   I've made myself many custom sections for all manner of uses with Fastrack, just as I've always done with good old tubular.

I made the switch and haven't regretted it.  When I first built my layout it was Fastrack, owing to the fact that I had it from two sets, along with extra track I'd bought for setting up at Christmas.  Since I've narrowed my interest to 70's through early 90's Lionel, I decided to go back to tubular. It just looks "right" with the era of my trains, and fits in well with my carpet-top toy train layout.  The O31 curves also allowed me to get two loops on my 4x10 platform. I still use some of my Fastrack around the tree but that's it.

It's a personal decision and there is nothing wrong with either choice really.   I bought up a few piles of it (fastrack) a couple of years ago and used it on Christmas layouts and on a layout for my son.  It worked just fine, absolutely no issues.  That said, I never had any intentions of switching my main layout over.  One reason was due to the potential cost of switches.  In all honesty though, I'd have to say I just like the looks of tubular better, to me it is quieter, and it is certainly no more difficult to work with.

I started off with the FasTrack that came with my starter set and expansion packs, but I've liked the look of tubular track all along.  The only additional FasTrack I've bought is a pair of transition sections.  The nostalgia factor certainly plays a major role in choosing traditional tubular, but since I have experience with it now, I find it superior to FasTrack in that it is significantly quieter and allows greater flexibility in trimming sections to fit (not there yet, but I'm thinking ahead!) and in electrical isolation.
