I bought the car new from a break up set and the smoke unit is not working. I've done all the obvious things so I want to inspect the smoke unit itself. Anyone know how this thing comes apart?  This one has got me stumped. I can't find the body screws to take it apart!    Thanks.

I took one apart and there are some screws in it that you just dont expect, im trying to remember where they are but that information is evading me. That repair was like a hundred and fifty projects ago. I think there are posts from the roof that hold the shell on the body. When you find them youre gonna go, "wow thats different" because thats what I said. Sorry I cant remember

I don't have experience with the same car you are thinking about, but I had a stumper recently too.

Did you actually remove the trucks themselves?

On my car, I had to remove both trucks, then each end had a screw that was holding the frame to a post that came down from the roof, like Matt mentioned.  It was impossible to get to these screws with the trucks on (might not have even been visible, I don't have the car in front of me to look right now)

Good Luck.

Mike is right in that one of the screws is under one of the fuel tanks.  However, the tank is held on with high strength glue.  Back when I did mine I asked Eric for help and he advised me to drill a 3/16" hole in order to gain access with a screwdriver.  The next thing to overcome is that the side body is also glued to the frame/base.  Be careful not to break the lower door guide portion because it is thin and delicate.  Lionel did not assemble these with maintenance in mind.  Fuel tanks are available from Lionel if you want to eliminate the access hole.
