I have upgraded a PS1 Allegheny 2-6-6-6 Primer 20-3017-1 with PS3 Steam upgrade kit 50-1911.  This is my first PS3 upgrade.  Everything checked out in conventional mode and now ready to download sound file.

I downloaded PS3 sound file from 20-3505-1.

I have DCS Loader program 5.0.0

I have the TIU fixed output 1 attached to track with engine on it.

TIU Rev L, USB plugged into the TIU & PC, Z-500 Brick plugged into Aux Power input on the TIU.

I opened the Loader program and opened the saved sound file.  I received a error message.

"Critical  error.  Unable to continue.  No engine was found on the track."

What step did I miss??  Should the power to the TIU be direct into Fixed Volt 1 on the input side rather then through Aux power input?  When using aux power input should it be putting voltage to the track?  I just checked with multimeter and it is 0 volts on the track.  Another line of questions is could I have downloaded the wrong sound file?   I see on other engines PS3 sound file and a PS3 upgrade file.  20-3505-1 just has a sound file.

Thanks for any guidance.

Mark

Joe,

Thanks so much yes I got the sound file downloaded and works great.  Now I have a smoke unit question.  The original PS1 needed to be replaced and I got a AA 0000012 thinking that it was for a PS3 so I would not have to modify anything.  The smoke unit fan runs but no smoke.  It appears the heating elements are not heating up.  (Heating elements cool to the touch.)  What are my steps to trouble shoot this?

FWIW, I recently upgraded a PS1 R-K to PS-3, and had no problems with smoke unit.  Are you sure (1) it worked before upgrade and (2) you have the wires correct?  One way to check smoke unit is to unplug tender from loco (I assume the board is in the tender---if not, I wouldn't do this but would unsolder a wire ) and then place an ohmmeter on the heater wire connections.

Sorry, just got home. After you looking at the post above, again, are you sure you have it wired to the board at the correct pins? If it does have a good ohm check with the meter I would double check the pins connections as RJR points out? Wires them selves also good? After that if the board is shorted or similar, it would be out of my league.

I haven't run into this myself. Their pretty rock solid as long as they have fluid they have always worked for me.

PS, I always solder directly to the elements and not the traces. They maybe fine, it's just a habit.

Thanks I disassembled it and re-soldered all the wires and adjusted the wick.  I checked and I have good ohm check.  Smoke unit works now.  It puts out lots of smoke at idle but at speed not so much.  It speeds up way to fast and has no chuff so I will need to check the tach reader in the morning to see if needs adjustment.  Which may solve all this as well.

Thanks again,

Mark

G,

Thanks yes it appears to be the tach reader.  I may have done something to the board or the optical reader when I unsoldered the optical reader to adj the distance from the flywheel to the reader to .030.   I did an ohm test across the legs of the optical reader and the one with the probe pointing at has no reading on it.  So not sure if I burned something on the board or the optical reader or both.

Would you or anyone know what part number I need to order?

I know it is the tach reader on BC-1000003 wire harness. I looked through online parts on the MTH site and found Tach Board AG-0000102 but the picture does not look right. Also found Optical Reader AG-0000078. Do I need to order Tach Board and Optical reader separate?  Or if I find out the right part number does the optical reader come with the tach board?

Thanks,

Mark

I did a search with word "sensor" on the MTH parts site and come up with these part numbers.

AG-0000083 w/0.5mm spacer

AG-0000047 w/1.5 mm spacer

AG-0000054 w/1.5 mm spacer this says it's with a tiny resistor added for special app?

I believe there's an AG0000058 that there's no spacer on?

AG-0000041 w/2.2 mm spacer This is the biggest spacer for PS2

Do these part numbers look right and what is the difference between AG-0000047 and AG-0000054?

Thanks,

Mark

I put a few things in your post but my parts bags may have been re-used and not accurate? I had three different spacers but only see two of the numbers now.

I'll have to dig up my old orders.
