A few weeks ago I saw this unitized work train on a spur in Chiloquin, Oregon. I haven't seen this kind of equipment before. The train carries its own crane which can travel along all the cars. I didn't get a good look at the other end, but I suspect it is an unpowered control cab. Can anyone tell us the particulars of the presumed custom-built locomotive unit?

Incidentally, Union Pacific has a newer maintenance station at this location.

I found this photo on the internet, showing the "caboose" end of a similar train.

I recently saw an HO model of an old Barnhart log loader crane. The prototype units were made to travel along a string of flat cars for the purpose of loading and unloading the train. The idea has interesting possibilities for a work train on a model railroad, perhaps using ordinary flatcars or gondolas with minor modifications to accommodate the travelling on-board crane.
