I recently acquired the Lionel O scale Chicago & Alton set with all three add on cars. I am reviewing the manual. Any running or service tips? The horn sounds very unlike a traditional steam engine. I noticed that another member recently stated that some RRs used horns in place of steam whistles to conserve steam power. Any comments are appreciated. Thank you from a kid that grew up around trains in Chicago and St. Louis!

The "whistle" on the Alton limited was/is not one of Lionels better efforts. Having said that, the IMO, the TMCC version is better than the legacy version.

When Lionel took the TMCC whistle and made it quillable for the legacy Alton as well as the blue comet it became even more "hornlike".

Lionel offered a revised soundset swap with a different whistle for owners of Legacy blue comets.

A second offering of blue comets came with the revised soundset.

Haven't heard many complaints about the legacy altons, I presume they aren't as popular.

Legacy Alton Limited for comparison( not my video)
