I just recently ordered 2 NS heritage SD70ACes.  I also have a PE legacy loco on preorder.  I have not recieved them yet.  I am wondering how long would a 2oz bottle of smoke fluid last in one of those locomotives?  I am getting ready to order a bunch of different smoke fluid from JTs magasteam and would like to get an idea of how much I should order.  If 2oz is only going to be enough to fill a loco 6 times, maybe I should go with 8oz.  What size do you typically order when buying smoke fluid?  As of now, I only have the LC PE set.  That loco does not take much smoke fluid at all.  Thanks for your answers.

I used to go through that much in a couple months when I ran Steam engines in the basement most nights.

But I like the smoke in them. I run MTH engines on MAX smoke.

Therefore it really depends on your usage, how often, how heavy and how long do you run smoke?

From JT I buy the Refill bottles. They last at least a year. I use 3 'flavors' Coal Fired Steamer, Sawmill (sawdust) and Christmas Pine.  The Coal Fired Steamer is a strong mean smell (accurate), not for those who want something pleasant.

I believe this to be an excellent question/topic; i.e., how long does x-amount of smoke fluid last in a locomotive?

To be useful, however, the answer needs to be expressed in number of minutes, with full smoke on, after starting with a known amount of fluid, and with as close a beginning and an ending run criteria as possible.

For example, for a given locomotive, run it with the smoke on until the smoke starts to disappear, but not completely gone (dry), to prevent damage. Then, add 20 drops of fluid, start the stopwatch, and run the locomotive until the amount of smoke starts to disappear as closely as possible to match the condition as when the test was started. This will give an idea of how long smoke fluid lasts.

Of course, the results will be different for each individual locomotive . . .

Just my 2¢

Speaking of smoke is MTH ever going to release multiple scents again? My LHS has only had unscented for the last year. Is my LHS just lame or is MTH not producing smoke fluid like it used too. I prefer Megasteam but they don't sell it in my area.Originally Posted by jpcommons:

You are correct but wait time plus shipping costs which at 5.00 for one bottle is not worth it to me. You really have to mail order multiple bottles to make it cost effective. I prefer scented smoke but can live with unscented or regular. I don't need 6 bottles at a time. It I am placing an order online for something else I will purchase some as it doesn't normally frive up the cost of shipping. They ship it in a padded envolope with two dollars worth of postage. I recogn you need to pay the packer and for packing materials but I don't want to pay more for the shipping than the product. Originally Posted by gunrunnerjohn:

I did that already and even brought in an example for them to try. They said it has no name recognition in our area so they wouldn't order any. That was a while back and they may have changed their minds so maybe I will try again. Originally Posted by Russell:

That is a great idea but I am afraid I a bit of an anomaly there are no train shops or model railroaders where I live here in So Cal.  It's either computer games or going out partying which I don't do.  Most of the folks I run in to her have never hear of or seen O gauge trains. I drive 40 miles to get my train supplies. O gauge rail road people do exist here just not within 40 miles of my house. Originally Posted by gunrunnerjohn:

Thanks for all of the feedback.  I placed an order with them yesterday.  Certainly more than I need I am sure.  I wanted to try a lot of the different scents that he has.  I only got one large bottle (nada).  Because of the feedback, I decided that I did not need any other large bottles yet.  I figure that the scent might not be as strong at the end of the bottle but at least they should still smoke.
