Hi,

I used JB Weld, lots of rubber bands and lot's of patience's, it broke in big

pieces so it was like a jigsaw puzzle and so far it's looking good. the bad news

is the chassis the jb Weld didn't hold and if feel apart but on ebay last week

I won a repro chassis which I hope works out, as I was told made of steel

and it needs to be painted black but one side where the motor goes has a

slight dent which I hope I could bend flat again (I hope).

Thanks

Hi,

Just a update, I finished the boiler with a second coat, I think it came out

pretty nice, I used a spray can of Rust-Oleum Satin Black. Next I found another

chassis a 700-2 it looks complete except for the two center wheels and gear,

which I have from the broken one I have, we'll see how it works out, but

getting there.

Hi all,

Just a update on the continuing Hudson restoring project, this is what I'm up to,

I was able to get another 700E-2 chassis and a original 700E motor, the new chassis

came with four wheels but two of the just broke up like a cookies, so I had to mix and

match with the other chassis I had, the biggest part was I Dremeled the two inner

wheels to remove there flanges otherwise the wheels would not fit so far now it seems

to fit O42 track before with all the wheels on that was a no go, is there a size difference

between a 700E-1 and 700E-2 most likely the E-2 is for semi-scale? so far looking

good just need the a few more parts.

Well this has been a great restore, still have a few things to work on, the biggest

problem was that a lot of the part's were wrong, the I had to get an original

700e/763e motor and a replace 700e-2 chassis, insulators, screws and rivets.

One thing I had to build was a worm shaft rubber coupler that would hook up

to the motor coupler, I took three rubber washes they look like oreo cookies

and glued the three of them together make two holes on either side for attaching

to the motor shaft and the results were great I got it running. This is just a test

run.

Thank you for the info it was a help, and now the Hudson, it's almost done just

need a pilot truck a few screws, some jewels (red) and a cow catcher. All I have

to say is now I know why it's considered there best engine, when you put

it all together it's heavy and it runs smooth, now to find a tender! Will add more

pictures when the lights better.

Lookin' Good!

If you have the shell off again, I am interested in the motor to drive linkage system. I could only find a separated parts diagram on Olsen's for a newer engine. Would you post a close-up photo?

When you think of this engine in 1937, it was truly a nice engine and it still is today.

Did you see the post from a new member that has his father's? He wants to set up his father's set again. The last time they were run was 1972. He had an original 700E in the thirties as a child.

Lionel no. 700EW

Perhaps you could email him with some tips as you've been inside and out of one.

Here's a picture of the Hudson with the shell off, because of the 773 worm shaft being

shorter than the original I had to think of something to use to take up the space and

hook up the two together so these three washes seem to work the best, I had to glue

them together with Pliobond cement it's good with heat up to 200 degrees and it seems

to hold good, It's great when you have access to good Hardware store which I found

in New York City, when you find one that has the draw stuff you always find something

to use which is great. Oh I had to change the wiring since this picture was taken it was

falling apart when I worked with it and after it was done it seem to work better so I

guess it's a plus.

After about two month, the Hudson runs again! I did a lot of work on this bad boy.

All I'm waiting for is a few more screws and a cowcatcher and it will be done, sorry

about the snow set-up it's been up since Christmas and I can't take it down yet. I still

have to get a few curve tracks hopefully I can get a few O54 to run this on if not it will

have to be a wider curve.

Update!

It was a tight finish but I got a tender for my Hudson, it what it looks to

be a reproduction in get this plastic so what I won was a T700 tender metal

chassis and trucks with the plastic cover looks good I think, and I did find a set

of Gargraves O54 track and it runs great on it.

For everyone's info; for those trying to restore an original 5344 that has a rotted body, Williams has some scale Hudson shells for sale. They look very close to the original Lionel bodies but whether or not they would be a direct fit is the question. I would guess that they would need to be adapted and modified but who knows? Might be a great way to restore the 5344's that have been damaged beyond repair.

New Update,

I finally got the new wheels on and they came out great and with new axle

bearings as well. The only problem I had was I put in a the gear worm I had and it

was the wrong one most likely a later version, so I ordered a original worm gear

from Encore Toy Trains and it was a perfect fit and when put back together

the train runs great nice and smooth, will add pictures later.

How about Hudson products parts.  Charles Ro had some back when I converted my 783 into a 700e.  They had any part you needed.  I was lucky and got three sets of lionel 90s 700e flanged drivers who I had a machinest friend who turned the flanges down to match his 37 700 e flanges.  I runs great on the t rail of gargraves.  He also turned all other wheels for me too.

A complete article was done with photos in a issue of an issue of lion roars.  I used a kramer tender with northwest short lline wheel sets in it.
