today i participated in an online auction and was successful in picking up two rare Marx cars that should not have been stuck into random sets the auction house obviously pieced together without a lot of knowledge of Marx trains.  the que to the cars' rarity wasn't that easy to see in the one small photo the auctioneer supplied for each lot, but my real thought was with the seller who, with even a little information from what i suspect was a deceased relative, could have greatly increased their selling price.

i really don't fault the auction house too much on this.  after all, they make money regardless of the outcome and they probably don't feel it's worth the time for them to catch a few mistakes here and there by hours of research.  but again, this is information the buyer should have had, but more than likely did not.

not the first time i've seen this happen.

cheers...gary

Just about every time I buy a set, I tell myself I am going to start putting little stickers under each item saying what set it goes to. I never do, but the thought is there.

Hopefully when it is there turn to sell off, the stuffwill be worth enough to pay the auction house or who ever does the selling for them.

i should add a caveat to my original post...

i've been on travel so the rare Marx cars i mentioned just arrived.  not only on those cars, but apparently ever car in this collection had an adhesive number tag on the underside which i've got to believe corresponded to some sort of inventory system.  so it not only helps to document your collection, but it doesn't do anyone any good if that information is never found.  i confess that i find myself in this situation.  i have a pretty complete spreadsheet of most of my collection, but its in an Excel spreadsheet on a computer that requires a password i doubt anyone will bother to figure out.

gotta fix that situation.

cheers...gary

I keep an Excel spreadsheet with all my trains, accessories, etc. and current values.  In the event that selling them as various lots appears to be a better option, I keep another listing with the appropriate locomotives for various passenger or freight consists -- something that REALLY comes in handy for my Maerklin HO trains -- and sum the totals accordingly.  I then save copies to my phone -- which comes in handy when I'm perusing the tables at shows and can't remember if I already have a certain item I'm admiring -- as well as my IPad, desktop and a hard copy as well .  I've told my wife that if something happens to me, she'll at least have a reasonable, ballpark idea of what she can expect for them.

why the red ends only appear on these two 3/16" scale Marx cars will likely always be a mystery.  the frame (floor) and car ends are made from a single piece, so my WAG is that someone fed a load of blanks into the stamping machine the wrong way and whereas the red side should have been on the inside, the part wound up backwards.  to recover, the UP (already with red sides) and the yellow PFE reefer were two cars that probably could hide the mistake better than the other boxcars.

fun stuff...gary
