No, as most of those 300 cars were stored on the IRM main line trackage, which sees no operations over the winter, since the Museum is closed.

From what I understand, the cars were supposed to be gone by the Memorial Day weekend.  They weren't, so there was a shortened ride on the 28th and 29th, much to the dismay of the patrons.  I also understand there was a penalty involved if they weren't off the property by a certain date.

I don't think UP paid the storage fees, the car owners did.

I was at IRM with my son on Sunday, the 29th, riding the heavyweight coach train pulled by Frisco 1630, just before they began prepping to haul out those stored cars. The conductor on our car told us that IRM was getting $2.50 per car, per day in storage fees. So depending on how many days they were stored there (assume say 180 days) and at 135 cars (if that was all of the stored cars), then IRM earned over $60k.

That's a decent chunk of funds that IRM can make good use of, considering how many locomotives, cars, track, buildings, etc. they're trying to keep in shape and operating. Plus they now have a $700k project to construct the turntable pit for their new / old turntable they just received from UP. I joined the museum that day just to toss some cash their way. They sure need it.

Good information, however, I have since learned that the car total was 400 cars, and that last remaining set of 135, was just the final "unit train set" to depart.
