Any word on changes regarding opening to the public on Saturday?  I'll be long gone by then, but am curious as I hope that the meet can be revitalized.  

I keep hearing rumors of "big changes", but haven't seen any reliable information.  (Yes, I'm asking the OGR forum for "reliable information".  Hey, it COULD happen.)

Due to dissatisfaction on the part of the manufacturers and larger dealers regarding the lack of new blood at York, I've heard from several dealers that the Orange (and Purple?) halls will be open to the general public (no TCA signup or guest sponsorship required) on Saturday.  However, I'm still waiting to hear reliable details regarding this.  

It's gonna happen, it's just a matter of when and how.

It's not going to happen without the PA Dept of Revenue changing the special agreements they have had with the Eastern Division since the mid 1980s.  At that time the agreement was TCA members only with Dealers only collecting sales tax and separated in different  halls than the Member Halls.  Change the meet by allowing the public in and the Dept of Revenue would likely force sales tax to be collected in the Member Halls too.  Would the members in those four halls go for that?

Besides, where is this "public" going to come from?  Philly (2 hrs), Pittsburg (3.5 hrs), Baltimore (1 hr).  I don't see the "public" coming from those distances for a Saturday event where the dealers are itching to leave at noon.

Hi Joe, if you had occasion to personally observe such an event, who would you estimate was that "public."

I attended it twice, back when I was attending every show within a 2-hour drive. It was the typical Greenberg turn-out...many families with kids for a "day out". Not the long line at the opening like some shows. There was a interesting "O" modular layout...smallish in size, but set up and run by only 2 guys. I think the show took up 3/4 of the Orange Hall (typical Greenberg size).

It's hard to judge what the "public" was made of except how much was sold, not counting "Thomas" stuff. A show like "World's Greatest Hobby" has very little for sale for serious train buffs, and, according to dealers I spoke with, "Thomas" was the only thing selling at the Philadelphia show.

So, a goodly number of tourists out for a stroll, then, at the museum, as it were; not exactly a packages-flying-out-the-door type of event?

I wonder if Scenic Express is there, which I would consider an important indicator of retailing possibilities.
