Hi all.

I have just picked up a Ives 62 Parlor Car to go with a 60 Baggage Car and a 61 Chair Car, all 3 in olive green litho.  The parlor car seems to have had gold painted wheels (not the treads, just the sides, similar to the American Flyer Mayflower set).  The other cars don't seem to have any coloring at all on the wheels.  The 62 is quite dirty and looks to be all original.  I have noticed the painted wheels on other cars, but I am no Ives expert.  Does anyone have any thoughts on painted wheels.     I'd like to clean it up as best as I can and would repaint as appropriate.

Dave.

The only ones I've seen on cars (that I believe) were painted by the factory are all black, flange and all.  This is typically on cars from the late teens.  In the early 1920's, the wheels are left shiny tinplate and stay that way until the end.

I've seen some painted colors by previous owners, but it never quite matches any Ives original paint.

That being said, some of the early cast iron locomotives came with tin pilot wheels that were painted...usually red to match the trim of the loco.

If you're going to repaint parts of the car, do what makes you happy.  Wheels can always be swapped out if you decide you don't like them painted someday.
