For what it's worth, that is actually a Santa Fe style caboose simply painted for NYC, as the NYC 17,000 series cabooses didn't have that high cupola.

True but with a reconfiguration of the cupola, and other mods I can easily turn that into a CB&Q NE1/4 3 window 28ft/30ft Waycar.

As noted this is not an exact prototypical model of the NYC woodside caboose.  Attached are some proto photos of 19000 series cabooses.

 

 

How is this a review?  A catalog description and a bunch of pretty pictures is what it is.  Where is a brief description ot the prototype along with a prototype photo?  How do the scale dimensions compare to the prototype?  How much does it weigh?  Does the smoke unit work well?  Are the marker lights functional?  Just a few of the questions that a proper review usually answers.

Does this mean some "museum" acquired a caboose, from who knows where, and painted it for NYC?

The NYC 17000 series were built as Michigan Central. They could have higher cupolas because they did not have to contend with the close clearances in other parts of the NYC System. Some of these cabooses dated back to the 1880's and had several variations. Often they had been built with 4 windows per side but many lost one over many rebuilds.

 

 The NYC 17965 that is displayed in the pictures above is on display in Ypsilanti Michigan. The area it would have been in when it was in service. It is a shame about the weird 7 on it.

As for the K Line it is not prototypically correct, if you look at the construction of the cupola and other features. It dose not match the prototypes on the web site but dose come close. So Hot Water is correct in his statement that it is a ATSF style Waycar, as the cupola and roof walks are standard for ATSF wooden and steel Waycars. I did find a pic of a Wooden ATSF caboose 1421 built in 1923 by the American Car and Foundry http://www.vistadome.com/trains/oerm/oerm03.jpg  that had 3 windows as per the K Line. This also looks to be the prototype that lionel used for their wood caboose. The difference between the Lionel and the K Line is the roof walk. Lionel is correct for that prototype while the K Lines roof walk is correct for the ATSF Steel Waycars  The cupolas are incorrect for the NYC Cabooses.

for what its worth I have this caboose and its one of my favorites.

Here are some more pics for comparison. The last three are GTW and CB&Q NE 1/4. The reality is that most wood cabooses or Waycars are similar in construction.

 

 

Interesting somehow this one got swapped.

I have no problem painting an ATSF caboose in NYC.  I have the same caboose in UP yellow.  It is stunningly well done.

 

But really good NYC cabeese are availablefor 3- railers - I have the 717 And its Williams equivalent, and a wood Walthers model of the same thing.  If you really want an ATSF caboose with NYC markings, I say go for it.

It seems that both Lionel and MTH have produced a large number of "fantasy" paint schemes on cars for all the major railroad lines. Here are a few.

 

 

I would be interested in some of the typical comments included in a "review" rather than just the factory specs.  Does it look good sitting on the track - is it level, even, with the trucks proper spaced under the body or is there too big a gap?  Is the paint and lettering crisp when you get really close.  do any of the doors, etc., operate, etc.   How does the smoke unit operate? Well, or only good at high voltages.  it the lighting steady and good, and evenly distributed.  Does it have really low rolling friction, or like some older cars, take as much to pull it as three or four modern ones?  

 

I see these from time to time and have passed, but prices are good and if it is really a good one, I might snap one up next time. 

I guess it depends on when you are trying to depict.
The 17000 series of NYC cabooses do have higher cupolas than the 19000 series. There was much more variety in the 17000 series. Some of the subclasses within the series numbers as few as 5 and because of their longevity they had many rebuilds and alterations. The caboose in Michigan is in the proper location for a caboose in this series to run and disputes obvious alterations like the clunky panels fit over the roof that make an angled roof and the sloppy numbering job I am not convinced that it is not a former NYC caboose. It looks enough like the K-line car that I'm happy that it looks enough like a 17000 series car for me.

Plans for modifying a Lionel 6-6907 caboose.

 

Adding wire side railings, removing the "side marker lamps", adding a lighted interior and repainting to look more like a 17000 series caboose. Also increasing the truck center to center spacing would help. 

 

Looking forward to the reconfiguration.  Do you plan to start a thread documenting the project?
