I have an opportunity to purchase a complete set of K-Lines 64230 series Santa Fe map boxcars and I noticed that they also did a 64850 series that was similar but had black roofs and ends instead of being all brown. I need the help of any K-line fans out there, did K-Line offer a complete set of the 64850s like the 64230s or did they go under before completing it? I ask this because I like the looks of the black roof versions better but if it didn't have all the cars I'd stick with the 64230s. I do have a couple of the Map cars with metal ladders but I don't have access to them right now to find the number sequence on them so i'm not sure what series they were part of.

Jerry, I bought the 64230 series cars back in the early 1990's. I believe there are 9 cars (64231-64239). The 64237 car of the series was painted incorrectly, there is no map on the car.

As far as the 64850 series black roof cars, if you do a search on them, only the first 3 cars or so come up. My guess is the 64850 series was never completed.

There were two orange sets, I have both but are currently in storage. Set #'s were 766-1051A and B. 4 cars sets and about as beautiful as you could want. I'm thinking I bought these new about 1999 or 2000  ( a long time ago....!).

Jerry, my advice is buy the set your being offered, complete sets rarely come up and if the price is fair it would be a nice addition to your fleet.

I beleive the brown cars are box cars and the orange cars reefers.

I was collecting the reefers, in fact two sets so I could have all the names show from both sides of the track. I beleive I never did get a full set though. There was also a second run later of the reefers more detailed but I only was able to get 2 or 4 of the cars and also wondered if all were made befor K-Line went under.

Like mentioned above one of the reefers also had both sides the same. Sounds like both the box and reefers were done at the same time in the paint shop.
