I was watching football this weekend and noticed some commercials for a Kindle Fire for $49 brand new.  My friend who once had a Kindle Fire said that they are really locked down and to be careful.  In other words they are not a real Android device.  They are locked to the Amazon store as opposed to Google Play.

I am thinking for $49 if it would run the MTH and Lionel apps for train control it may be a good investment.  I am not sure they both have an Android app yet but.....

Anyone here know?

You can root any device, pretty much. The issue is the difficulty in doing it and what you'll lose by rooting. By rooting the Fire, you'll forfeit access to the Amazon instant video streaming app and that lending library they have. You'll also void the warranty and if it becomes unbootable, well, you've shot yourself in the foot.

I ordered one of the 7 inch $34.99 Fire models today.  If you read the customer questions or comments, there is a link to a Youtube video that shows how to add the Google Playstore to this device, which, in-turn, will give you access to the MTH app.  I may be missing something, but I hope it's that simple.  If not, the Fire will become one of the grandkid's Christmas presents this year.
