The horn when activated "stays with" the originally identified lead engine

That's how it's supposed to work.

the original engine in trail, when reverse is activated so it runs in lead, the ditchlights do not stay on until the horn is used,

That's a changeable setting for the trailing member unit and also for the lashup itself.
