Well after taking this thing apart about 9 months and leaving it sit on the bench, I had the urge to get it done. Although not done yet, the bulk of the work is done for the fixed pilot and Kadee conversion. I also remove the foot boards on these units and rebuild the pilot to represent the steel plate that was bolted and welded on later in it's life. The shell will also get some roof details, and a few other items before weathering.

Electro coupler removed and the end of the truck cut and filed smooth to clear the draft gear box of the Kadee coupler. Spacer allows the pilot assembly to sit flush on the entire frame instead just the edge of the shell.

3

Foot boards gone, bench grinder comes in handy here. Spacer cut out and fit to lower the pilot. Coupler spacer to lower the coupler to the proper height.

4

5

Traced out the spacer to cut the other one. It gets rough cut on the band saw, and then filed and sanded to fit.

6

Coupler height adjusted to the proper height using styrene.

If you are using Kadee coupler to switch cars, using the magnets, trip pin height is crucial. Coupler height is not crucial for switching, but there needs to be a standard to keep all the cars coupled through any type of bad track. After everything was glued together, this pin was just barely touching the gauge, as it should be.

8

Rebuilding the pilot with styrene to simulate the steel plates.

PSC air hose and glad hands. This is the rear pilot and will be coupled to a non-powered GP30, so I don't need the trip pin. I put an air hose here to make sure the 2 diesels don't uncouple by mistake while switching. The air hose looks better anyway.

While the pilots are off, it's much easier to drill the new holes for the full length handrails which will come later.

Plenty of room for truck swing. Nothing binds in the curves, although my minimum is 072.

Yes I will have to match the yellow for all the cab and roof details and then the pilots need to be painted blue to match the shell. I primed both pilots today with gray so the white styrene will be the same shade of blue as everything else. The yellow is by far the hardest to match, but once weathered, it should all blend together nicely.
The pilots attach with 2 screws, so they can be removed if needed, not not there would be a reason.. other than its easier to remove the truck with the sideframes on. I'll take a close up picture but the screws do go through the deck, but they are far enough back that they are inside the nose and rear of the shell. Takes some careful drilling, but they just clear.

I figured I would just drill through the deck and cut the screws off flush at the deck, but I was able to conceal them and not interfere with anything else.

Here ya go Ray:

I put some shrink tube over the coupler so it don't get covered in paint. A PSC speed recorder with cable added to the front truck.

The 2 outer holes are specifically for mounting the pilot. The center hole is the rear mounting screw for the Kadee. (The front coupler mounting screw only goes into the pilot and not through the frame because it's too close to the front edge of the deck.)You can see the screws just poke through the frame and do not interfere with the shell at either end. Keeps everything hidden, solid, but yet still removable.
