Hi, lately my Lionel legacy mikado has been giving me 2 cab light blinks, which according to the manual indicates a smoke element issue. Oddly, I can add smoke fluid and it will smoke fine for a while, then suddenly it will stop and do 2 cab light blinks. I always try to reset it when this happens, which occasionally works. Anyone have experience with this issue, and any possible fixes? Thanks.

Any fix would seem that it will involve pulling the boiler shell I imagine. I'd check to see if the smoke resistor is dying and/or touching the side of the smoke bowl (if metal). Could be you just need a new smoke resistor.
That engine is designed to do just what it is doing with a smoke unit failure. Like John stated, you need a new resistor. John, that engine uses the plastic smoke reservoir. It is a very easy job and the engine comes apart very easy. You can do all the resets in the world and it is what it is.
Like they both said, the Resistor could be bad, If the resistor is held in by screws, on the PCB it might be loose causing temporary function and its when it gets hot hot it loosening up. ALSO smoke fluid does conduct. If you put enough fluid in there it could cause the dead resistor to complete the circuit. Another thing to look into is the smoke unit harness. I have found Connectors not plugged in all the way and loose Receptacles in the connector housings.

I think all points were good and the one I most agree with is always is I remove and reseat all connectors then go from there you would be amazed how many times on these electronic engines it is a connector problem and reseating the connector fixes the problem or issue your having ! IMO

Top suspect in Legacy for that error is loose screws on the resistor. Whenever I have one of those apart, I always check the screws that hold the smoke resistor. It's rare that I can't tighten them some.
