I never understood why commercial entities are always asking for a facebook like...

Really?  The Point of any commercial entity asking for a "LIKE" is this:

-When said company creates a post, everyone who has LIKED the company will see the post.

-If you read the post on you Facebook wall and "LIKE" the post everyone you are friends with on Facebook will see the post.

-Some of these friends who see this post may "LIKE" the company as well. They may even browse their website, purchase something, come into their retail establishment, etc...

-Thus growing your "SOCIAL NETWORK", Client/Potential Client base, etc...

You see it's called "Social Networking" so your posts, entries, offers, pictures, etc... will get out, network and GROW.

ok, good explanation.   I actually looked it up in "facebook like" on Wikipedia, but didn't find the answer to my question.

Thanks.

The Rise of Facebook Video, Facebook Video is now larger than You Tube.

It’s official: instead of sharing YouTube videos, brands are now uploading more videos to Facebook directly.

NBC News, Fox News and others have reported that for the first time this week, Facebook it the number one social media for small to large businesses

See link above for the facts.

You want to keep your business on Facebook, just like OGR Magazine • Good Luck

Excellent explanation. Much better than I could do. I am on Facebook personally and  managed the business Facebook page for the local park railroad when I was the manager/head loco engineer/jack of all trades. Actually, we were owned and operated by the Parks Department of the county government (I was a Park employee). Most park facilities - ice rinks, botanical gardens, trains, boat rentals, and the park system itself had Facebook pages.

Before I took it over, we used it regularly but not to the fullest extent possible. Once I took it over, I sort of learned what did/didn't work and played around with it one afternoon. Granted your mileage may vary depending on the business but the response I saw was just incredible. We had a basic website but were generally a word of mouth type place. Ridership was approximately 70K people a year. I always enjoyed talking with passengers/regulars when time permitted and found many people learned about us on Facebook. Not long after, we had the most popular Facebook page of all park facilities in the county and were able to attract a lot of new people to the park and operation as well as interact with them during the off season, promote events, etc. During the off season, when we were not running trains for the public, we would generally get about 50 new "likes". That was a lot for the winter. The first winter I took over saw about 200-300 new likes - DURING THE OFF SEASON! I wish I had an exact number but it was just incredible. I especially found cool/interesting pictures occasionally really made the "crowd go wild". I also wanted to do the very, very occasional ticket giveaways, etc but the "big wigs" nixed that idea really quick.

I really learned a lot about how social media can aide a business. It should be done right or not at all. If you learn how to do it right, it can be your most valuable asset IMHO!

Yes... it's just that every 6 months there's a new "twist" to what social media encompasses.

Years ago, "blogging" was in style, and lots of blogs gave readers the ability to leave comments and interact with the poster.  Nice feature.  Then Facebook came out and overtook MySpace.  I don't like either, but I went into Facebook kicking and screaming.

Facebook is admittedly the Big Foot of social networking, but now we already have Pinterest and Instagram.   What the heck will be next???    Just when you think you have your head wrapped around the latest technology, another one is waiting in the wings.  And how many are just variations on the same thing???

Some days, I just like to call somebody with a phone and communicate the old-fashioned way.  But there's no guarantee of productive results there either.  Read the first post in this thread for an example of what I mean!!!

Hi J Daddy • Yes your employer or their consulting firm may be watching. Just like they watch the OGR Forum, every thing on the OGR Forum goes thru Google & Yahoo. But you have to look at the big picture. The fact is that Facebook is bigger than You Tube for generating business, if did in the proper way. It is more then just saying, "Like"

I spend a good amount of time on Facebook on behalf (mostly) of the shelter I volunteer with and the dogs we have there. Facebook, and social media in general, has done wonders in helping us find loving homes for these dogs, not only locally, but also in other areas.

I don't do a whole lot of train-related activity on Facebook, aside from some really fine On30 and narrow gauge groups that have sites there. Great groups because they stick to the topic in a positive way with positive attitudes, and they display some great modeling skills.
