I never understood why commercial entities are always asking for a facebook like...
Really? The Point of any commercial entity asking for a "LIKE" is this:
-When said company creates a post, everyone who has LIKED the company will see the post.
-If you read the post on you Facebook wall and "LIKE" the post everyone you are friends with on Facebook will see the post.
-Some of these friends who see this post may "LIKE" the company as well. They may even browse their website, purchase something, come into their retail establishment, etc...
-Thus growing your "SOCIAL NETWORK", Client/Potential Client base, etc...
You see it's called "Social Networking" so your posts, entries, offers, pictures, etc... will get out, network and GROW.
Excellent explanation. Much better than I could do. I am on Facebook personally and managed the business Facebook page for the local park railroad when I was the manager/head loco engineer/jack of all trades. Actually, we were owned and operated by the Parks Department of the county government (I was a Park employee). Most park facilities - ice rinks, botanical gardens, trains, boat rentals, and the park system itself had Facebook pages.
Before I took it over, we used it regularly but not to the fullest extent possible. Once I took it over, I sort of learned what did/didn't work and played around with it one afternoon. Granted your mileage may vary depending on the business but the response I saw was just incredible. We had a basic website but were generally a word of mouth type place. Ridership was approximately 70K people a year. I always enjoyed talking with passengers/regulars when time permitted and found many people learned about us on Facebook. Not long after, we had the most popular Facebook page of all park facilities in the county and were able to attract a lot of new people to the park and operation as well as interact with them during the off season, promote events, etc. During the off season, when we were not running trains for the public, we would generally get about 50 new "likes". That was a lot for the winter. The first winter I took over saw about 200-300 new likes - DURING THE OFF SEASON! I wish I had an exact number but it was just incredible. I especially found cool/interesting pictures occasionally really made the "crowd go wild". I also wanted to do the very, very occasional ticket giveaways, etc but the "big wigs" nixed that idea really quick.
I really learned a lot about how social media can aide a business. It should be done right or not at all. If you learn how to do it right, it can be your most valuable asset IMHO!
