The new catalog goes live this wednesday on their web site as well as ours. Great mix of new items. Had the pleasure yesterday of a visit from most of the "upper management" at Lionel. Howard and I talked about a number of things and without going into details expect some changes. And yes they hear us about the shipping sked! Remember they are just getting use to things and how they worked and now they plan to improve on that. Their Marketing guy, Mike Phillips spent some time with our IT guy and alot was accoplished. I am looking forward to the day when we go live with our new inventory control system and have "real time" data. I am not allowed to discuss what is in the new catalog till Wed. so please don't ask me too. Thanks Charlie....

Thanks Charlie.
Charlie you are a gem to always keep us informed, while respecting the wishes of your supplier. Thanks for the heads up about the release date for the new catalog.
I was told back in February that there were BIG changes coming from Lionel and this sure has played out. Let's all hope that these changes with give us the best Lionel ever.
Sounds like Lionel is at least trying to listen.

THANK GOD for both Lionel management and the hobby shop owners comming up with an mth product locator clone! You don't realize how POWERFUL a tool that is to both the consumers and store owners.
For those store owners who refuse to get on board you don't realize the easier $$ that can be made!
A big hear hear for product locator. I have bought MTH items which I would never have found the old fashioned way. LIONEL™ going that route would be a big deal for me since 80% of what I buy is the big L.
Charlie,
Eveyone seems to be assuming that your statement "new inventory control system and have "real time" data" references a Lionel specific dealer-wide system.
Is that what you're talking about or do you mean system for your store's use only?
Or it could be giving dealers real time access to Lionel's on hand inventory of products and parts as well as current shipping status
Thank you for the info. In Germany, many businesses are run by "Mittlestand" meaning a non-adversarial approach to common issues by all parties. We need this in the USA, where our habit in many instances is a shoot-out at the OK corral, with a lot of wasted time, money and energy. So, Lionel sitting down with a big seller and working through common issues is wonderful.
I saw something on the inter-web and it looks like the cover of the 2014 catalog has a New Haven Little Joe (EP-5) on the cover.

I believe what you saw was the 2014 Lionel Calendar. I have one and the Little Joe is on the cover of the calendar.

That would be us, not Lionel.

I have the catalog and that is NOT on the cover

My thoughts exactly! Charlie, thanks for your contributions to the forum.
Hoping they throw a few bones to those of us wanting some more Conventional Classics/PWC type items.
Thanks for the news on the ’14 preview.
There are new road names for one of their popular diesels.
I sure hope us Lionel Railroader Club members get our catalog in a timely manner.
If so inclined would one be able to preorder from this 2014 preview catalog?
Yes you can preorder. In fact if I recall correctly Lionel has stated they will only make the amount that has been ordered. So if you really want it better order in advance or chance getting one from a store that order extra ones.
I guess TrainWorld didn't get the memo? They posted this on Facebook.
Thank You Charlie, I will make a point to check out your web site locator. Will it be ready for the Christmas season?
I guess TrainWorld didn't get the memo? They posted this on Facebook.
can anyone identify what the steamer is?
can anyone identify what the steamer is?
Look's like a 9000 Class 4-12-2.
Thanks, Charlie & Chris!
David
It says 2013 on the picture posted.
Yes Fall 2013 would be correct.
David
Thats probably the point, theres plenty of those still on the shelves, especially the sharks. I saw the sharks going for $455 at Hobby Station.
Items that do not "move" typically roll over into the next catalog.
No reason for Trainworld to hide the cover, nuthin new on it.
Soooo....
What's in the catalog Charlie???
If they want the item to move quickly, then they need to make small amounts in new road numbers each year.
Andrew
It would be nice if they had better pictures of the E8s that more accurately describe what they claim them to be.
Will they use this catalog to show the finished locomotives and freight cars that were just concept art in the Signature Catalog?
Will the Lionel marketing team make corrections?
Andrew
Looks like maybe they're going back to the "landscape" catalog format? Let's hope it's not just a flyer!
As long as there's a decent Amtrak engine in this catalog, I'll be happy.
I hope there is some new items that actually look interesting. Some new VL locomotives?
i hope there is a 4014 in there I hope, I hope .
Specifically. Have the finished versions of the Auto Rack paint schemes been photographed for this catalog?
Andrew
I would like to see some Vision line scale rolling stock with sound again!
Hopefully some conventional classics sets in the 2014 preview, didn't the Walthers site also post a day prior to the catalog release?
LEAKS!!! WE NEED LEAKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! This Milwaukee Road and Northern Pacific addict needs to know what is coming out! Charlie you could always be the Edward Snowden of the O Gauge world and release the Lionel catalog 3/4 days early! If you need to flee from Lionel's wrath we could help you flee to Canada!
Those of us who are train addicts...are in dire straights! Please leak some product knowledge!!
I am not allowed to discuss what is in the new catalog till Wed. so please don't ask me too. Thanks Charlie....
WOW Charlie, this is just like those Saturday movies we had as kids which ended on a cliff hanger so you HAD to come back next week. WOW, this is SO exciting.
On a more serious note, great to have the inventory online for ordering.
Gerry

There will be a BIG leak on Wednesday...
Rusty
All this talk of leaks. Now I have to go down the hall.
If you have a local Lionel dealer go there if you can't wait till Wednesday. The dealers have them for viewing now. Take homes have not arrived yet.
Rusty Traque: Snowden is OK but let's hope he doesn't become "Chelsea" Manning!
Seriously, what we need is someone on the Forum who works for the NSA; he will know all the details of the new catalog for sure.
Wonderful surprises await you!
Great Alan!
I guess they found out how to keep this moron in suspense!
I vote for at least a little leak, dribble or something......
no count down clock as of this posting.
Wonderful surprises await you!
No leaks... and no shortage of teases either!!!
Leave it up to a Lionel catalog to turn a bunch of us older folks into young kids-before-Christmas again!!! Such anticipation...
David
It is just plain mean!
I really hope it is worth the wait as I will soon have money to buy from this catalog!
(PRR Legacy Steam and Diesel & maybe some new accessories)
I hope the LCS stuff is there too!
Hoping they throw a few bones to those of us wanting some more Conventional Classics/PWC type items.
Thanks for the news on the ’14 preview.
Yes, Same here!!!!!
But I think they will be giving this series a rest for a bit....Frankly, I am getting out of the scale stuff, and sticking with finishing my collection of PWC/CC series!!!!!!!!!
Where is Eric Snowden when we really need him?
Well I hope there is not to much in there, I just blew a big wad on third rails new plastic RDC cars, some B&O and a PRSL car, ouch! Missed the fist time around not this time. Saw theses ladies every day.

I'm hoping to be surprised with some new and exciting Flyer offerings.
But, I wouldn't be surprised if I'm not...
Rusty
Has anything from "Big L's" 2012 catalogue shipped yet?
I'd list a list of things I want to see... but I have a Freshman in college this year... and one the year after that... and one two years later...
Jon
I was just making a generalization. I have no idea what might be in the new catalog.
Perhaps we'll see the Norfolk Southern SD60-style locomotive done up in the Veterans blue/black with red/white ribbon paint scheme? That's a natural, and it would be an instant sell-out on pre-orders alone!
David
Doesn't appear to be a Cab Forward as I would think it would be on the front cover.
I was just making a generalization. I have no idea what might be in the new catalog.
I'll believe this when pigs fly. Good sense of humor Allan.

No, Gerry, I'm telling the truth. I really have no idea what's in the new catalog. I kind of enjoy being surprised and looking forward to the real thing when it's released.
I saw the catalog yesterday at the LHS.
Bill
Oh, and I paged through it of course.
Bill
They need a Gomez Addams set. A big dollar train which goes 6 feet down the tracks and blows up!
I just have to be patient......no LHS anymore.....
Peter
I saw the catalog yesterday at the LHS.
Bill
I predict that it will contain trains!
Will this be the normal release time of the Lionel catalog every year?
Here is what I saw:
Weathered Sharknoses-PRR, B&O
Weathered 4-12-2
Unpainted J, GS-2 or 4, 4-12-2, and Mohawk
Some more GP30's
N&W J 611
Seperate sale Texas Special, and PRR F3's from the Neil Young series
UP F3's from NY series
Christmas Story 30 yr ann. boxcar
Where the wild things are boxcar, and one other boxcar that was on the shipping list but not in the catalog.
Bill
Google Lionel weathered sharknose finds:
B&O LEGACY Sharknose AA - Weathered (Pwd A #855, Dmy A #857). 6-81597
PRR LEGACY Sharknose AA - Weathered (Pwr A #2020A, Dmy A #2021A). 6-81600

Even though I model the Chessie/CSX I would pre-order that unit in a heartbeat. Nice call!
I am just asking, if this catalog will go online in the morning, why hasn't LIONEL got a count down clock?
I just went to the site and saw no mention of this catalog coming out in the morning 9/11/13 ????????

Been reading your replys as I am in Vegas now and since we lost the phone app. can't get back that much. Many changes coming to Lionel, as for the clock, i don't know. But, expect a change in the web site. Lionel will be going back to releasing thier catalogs (AF, RTR and Sign,) all at the same time and back to Feb. instead of March/April. I expect we will see the Fall catalog return and not just as a after thought. Yes this catalog includes the roll out of the new tablet control system. That is the really big news in it. More to follow.
Welcome back Chris! (my son from his honeymoon) He missed the Lionel visit for his new wife! :-)
I figure this one will be worth about 4 pages of moaning and groaning. Not really a winner.
Glad I didn't buy the 611 set. Maybe I'll spring for the engine only. LOL!
Rusty: Loved the shot from Metropolis!

All the same stuff they can't sell, yawn.
What makes them think weathering locos is going to help them sell? If the weathering looks anything like Lionels past attempts that look like grey primer overspray..........good luck......blowouts anyone??
I just hope they fix the back steps on the GP-30 and of course produce them in a road name I want!

RickO, I asked the same exact question.
Ah yes but they have Harry Heinke weathering them and as he is such a recognized artist they are going to charge a few hundred extra dollars for his weathering job.
I think the common theme in this catalog is Lionel can't get the passenger cars made so they will sell all the set engines as separate sale.
NSBILL
Do you remember what the road names were on the new GP-30's ?
Thanks

I sure hope the catalog is up before dawn so I can be late for work.

I think I'll get the weathered 4-12-2 even though I already bought one last year given if the weathering looks good. I think the features on the 4-12-2 (steam whistle) and blow down effects make it a good buy. Too bad no mention of VL locos. Whatever happened to this rumored VL Big Boy coming out?
If people think Lionel is going to have blow outs on their products, you should think again. I don't think there will be blowouts anymore given the fact that Lionel now will only make to order and will not produce extra given that their cash flow is tight.
It would be great if in this catalog they included a die-cast body Three-bay, open-top Hopper with coal load in the correct Burlington Northern paint scheme, road number, and it must have die-cast roller-bearing trucks. The previous release of a BN open-top hopper had the paint scheme of a smaller, older hopper with journal bearing trucks.
An O Scale Chessie System Three-Bay Open-Top Hopper with coal for C&O, B&O, WM would be great, since there have been enough O scale sized Chessie System diesels made in the past 10 years to match the cars.
Andrew
What time will the new catalog be available tomorrow? LOCOMOTION
I can't wait to see it!
Welcome back Chris! (my son from his honeymoon) He missed the Lionel visit for his new wife! :-)
Best wishes to Chris and his bride.
