Is the BIG news about the passengers cars going to be production in the USA of the passenger cars along with new tooling?

I surely hope not!

When the last catalog heralded USA-made traditional size freight cars listed at about $20 more than equivalent traditional size freight cars elsewhere in the catalog...made 'over there'..., I had my doubts how patriotic allegiance would win out at a more than 25% premium.  Yeah, the flag on the box was snazzy, to be sure.  Most boxes end up not being celebrated on the layout, however.

Well, as a participant in the LHS business...located in the remnants of the rust belt and bastion of union ideology...I can safely say that the homeland heritage has not been a demand feature.  PRICE, however, continues...always and forever...to be a differentiator among like items.

That said, I tend to wince at the probable price differential that a USA-made aluminum passenger car/set built to the same bar-height as K-Line's final effort would garner.  Three years or more ago I challenged a Bachmann representative (their China facility apparently had possession of the K-Line tooling) at a York meet to re-introduce those iconic passenger cars under their own banner.  He said it wouldn't happen; it was studied, cost-analyzed, etc., and they would have to charge nearly $200 PER CAR to justify it.  At that price, in this market, in this economy, it was a no-brainer.....going nowhere fast.

That was then.  Nothing much has changed since that I'm aware of.

Yet, we can hope.  Maybe altruism will trump decent wages and modest profit as a business plan?

Yeah, right.

Meanwhile, back at the ranch...

Lionel's new tooling scale Freight cars have been nice.

An 89 foot intermodal flat car would sell very well and only Atlas has offered them and they currently are not in production.

CSX Phospate hoppers would be cool too even though it would kind of niche.

A CSX Slug based off of a GP30 would be cool too.

Atlas. I have several. I don't think they are making them right now but you can find them from time to time on the Bay.

I think I saw an Atlas one on eBay before. Why did they stop making them?  Also with the Atlas one can they go around 0-72 curves or do they need bigger curves.

Hoping for a GP40-2.................................Sweet!

Not true! There are a number of new tooled items including a diesel. Pictures, details and prices up on our web site Monday at 9 am.

Nope.  Think GE.

Today's puzzler:  Why does the Rock Island get a dome observation (they had exactly none) while the previously released California Zephyr didn't?

None of the above, but it does have a 44 in it's model number.

Also, some folks from Chicago and Milwaukee should like some new Heavy Mikado roadnames.

Yes they run on 0-72 curves, just watch the overhang on the inside curve.

I hope it's in the ge demo color paint. That will be so hot .

Assuming someone has guessed right, same here (I'm no purist) but I kinda doubt it. However, I wonder what sound/light/smoke features might be carried over from Lionel's original GE Evo model?

2 different things.

Yes, I know what an ES44C4 is. The locomotive in the picture above is not an ES44C4.

Well last weekend over on eBay a whole train of those K-Line 21" aluminum passenger cars in Milwaukee Road paint sold for over $200.00 each with the full length dome cars bringing about $250.00 each...so I'd say the market is ready for them.

Not to mention the CZ cars sell for the same or more with the transition car bringing $300.00

These days train production is almost never continuous, except for the most popular items. They make a production run of something, then put away the tooling for a few years until demand builds up and they think they can sell some more. Also remember that Atlas has had a bunch of problems with contract manufacturing in China and only now seems to be getting that sorted out and are getting back into full production mode.  Those long flats have been out of production for a while; I'd look for them to be back in a year or two. Same thing with Front Runners. In the meantime, there's the OGR board, eBay, and train shows.
