Lionel 3356 Horse Car Question

I have a manual and the only long strip in the car that I see is the "runway stop" 3356-21 that appears to fasten to the "runway" that channels the horses thru the car.

Here is the service manual for it.

Larry.  The service manual pages link came up 3656 for the cattle car rather than the horse car.  Can you do it again for the 3356 Horse Car??

I think if you can do it that it will show exactly what I have to do.

Thanks for the details.  I see the part.  It is called the runway stop but I don't see what holds it in place.  Any suggestions??

The runway stop slips behind the runway assembly and is free to slide. When the rear door is opened or closed, the runway stop slides back and forth. There is nothing that holds it in place. See the attachment, page 6 for an explanation of the back door. (Yes I know it is for the 3656, but the design is similar).

Please be patient.  I looked at page 6, but am still confused.  At this point I am holding the stop in my hand, if I place it loose in the car, it just lays on the bottom of the runway and would stop the horses from getting though.  It just seems that it should be hooked onto something?

When you close the rear door, the stop does indeed keep the horses from exiting the car. When you open the rear door, the horses are allowed to travel through the car and back out. The stop acts sort of like a mechanical switch. The stop is hooked to the rear door and slides back and forth when the rear door is moved.

The piece of metal is called the runway stop. It gets inserted into the two slots that are at the top on the back side of the runway. Nothing holds it in place. When it is slid all the way to the left, the end of the stop blocks the path of the horses, holding them in the car. When it is slid the other way, the runway is clear.
The runway stop has two pieces of metal sticking up that form a notch.
The center door had a projection that should be in between those notches when the body is mounted. Opening and closing the center door moves the runway stop back and forth.

CW, it took me a little while but I got it working based on your instructions.  There is a little spring clip of sorts that holds it in place so that it won't fall down into the runway.  Got it back together and all is good.
