Lionel 6-27079 NYC single door boxcar with unusual blue paint scheme?

Never say never, but growing up near the 4 track mainline in Schenectady in the 50's, I never recall seeing a blue scheme like this on any NYC boxcars. Jade green and red/gray "Water-level Route" schemes were common, but not this anomaly....

So far as I know it is legitimate (the car isn't 1:48, though). I could not find a photo of a real one, but Weaver also produced a 1:48 scale model of this boxcar paint scheme - I have it - and Weaver was not prone to fantasy schemes except as custom run jobs.

 

I do seem to recall seeing a photo of a real one, but it has been a while...

 

There was indeed a short-lived "script oval" on the NYC in the 60's - it was put on some EMD cab units noses, but I do not think that it was precisely this oval's style.

 

Anyway, I believe that the car is "accurate". With footnotes.

I found this picture. Its black and white, but the lettering is the same.

It's legitimate but if I remember correctly there were only 2 boxcars painted this way.

Paint scheme is correct. It was, however, experimental on two boxcars. One was a 40ft and one was a 50ft I believe.

You know what; it's NYC's own fault if they only painted two cars like that.

 

I think it looks good. Who knows, the NYC may have lasted longer if they had used all three paint schemes extensively.

 

Of course, I am partial to the Jade car and the red/grey car as well. 

Beings I live in Texas, its only natural for me to like those two cars.

 

I will be looking for some blue ones in the future.
