I have a pair of 6037 postwar Lionel cabooses, each with heavy damage on the 'front' end. I could splice the two damaged cabooses to create one good caboose, but there is no point in that when they are so commonplace and I already have several other variations of the same style of caboose. So I want to kitbash them into something different. I'm sure others have done this and I would be interested to see some creative ideas.

I did this Photoshop work to consider different possibilities ... comments welcome.

These are the donor cabooses. Apparently someone squared off a broken corner on the upper caboose. The lower caboose has steps broken off.

I like the idea of a short symmetrical center-cab caboose, but it's a bit too short for conventional trucks. I might devise a 4-wheel version?

King-cab short caboose is long enough for conventional trucks. Kind of interesting.

Two-cupola version is basically a gag item.

One trick I'm learned with splicing old Lionel shells: check for possible unequal distortion of body shells which appear to be identical. Spliced parts might not line up as perfect as you would expect.

In a show somewhere, I saw a version somebody had done of that double cupola

one shown above.  I am all for drover's or side door combine cabooses, pictured above,

and can't say I have seen any kitbashed out of Lionel cabooses (but would bet there are some out there),  That green one above looks like an old HO kit model that used

to be available...was that picture photoshopped?  That MoPac one looks like one from

maybe the same old HO kitbuilder, also photoshopped?

Thank You all for the different ideas. I haven't made a final decision yet. I'm glad I didn't start cutting before considering more possibilities.

I previously patched up a Marx caboose that had one broken corner, by salvaging the one good corner off an otherwise identical caboose which had THREE broken corners! Now I'm thinking of cutting the roof off the donor caboose, square the roof ends and shorten the body, to make use of an otherwise junk item.

That's unique and creative !  I have thought about kitbashing some kind of boxcab loco with the cabooses, but it would be a more involved project. Thanks for the photo !

I actually built this two-cupola caboose, using the two damaged cabooses shown in the first photo of this thread. It uses the major undamaged parts of both cabooses.

A two-cupola caboose provides additional crew seating for trains that require additional oversight or security. It can be positioned mid-train with four crew in the cupolas facing forward and backwards on both sides of the train. You have to wonder why Lionel never made this useful special-purpose caboose themselves.

The frame is simply cut and stretched with some added metal.
