I notice some of these trains have a lionel printed notice on the box saying they installed a Alkaline battery.
Is this not playing with fire? Over time wont that battery leak acid like the vintage Lionel Trains?

I just bought a sealed Century Club GG1, when I removed all the wrapping and the shell from the engine. I took the battery out. There was no rust, acid leak or anything etc. I guess it depends on where these engines have been stored.
The GG-1 was the only one that came with a 9V battery installed.
Ah ok cool.
So what do you all think of these products?
Especially the Hudson, F units and Turbine?

Out of them all, the 773 Hudson is the best in my opinion. The whistle is fantastic, the chugging is nice and deep, and a very crisp bell sound. Unlike the Berk and the Turbine, Lionel added the Wireless Tether between the engine and tender. Regardless, I plan on obtaining all of them in the near future.
I knew Marty would have them all!
So I guess the big question is....
"MTH PRR S1 Turbine or the Lionel CC"?
And why?
I'd be interested in the berk and the Hudson.
If the MTH is a comparable non-scale?
The one thing about the MTH will be a can motor. While the CC Turbine its nice and all if you are looking for can motor performance this ain't it. But the sound, smoke and PulMor performance is great!
Thanks Marty, I guess I am always concerned about reliability and durability.
I can fix a Pullmor but not a can motor...albeit I cannot fix TMCC or Legacy electronics, so at best I would have running pullmors with no sound or C&C type control, but with can motors I am dead in the water.
Other than, I guess the diecast is heavier and not as detailed as the plastic on the MTH?
Marty, you rule!

Marty E, thats a fantastic picture and its a WOW. So, is it for sure that Lionel placed an Alkaline Battery in all of the GG1"s? If so, I need to double check mine. I was so happy to see Lionel bring these back in TMCC that I had to buy all of both Century Club 1 and all of Century Club 2, and none has been ran, just looked at....They are all really nice pieces, and all of the cars and accessories and tee shirts and mugs and stuff that was offerred was great. These are really nice models of Toy Trains from YesterYear!!! Happy Railroading....
Marty, how do you like the F3?
All of my trains on my layout are either Lionel Legacy, MTH DCS, a couple of TMCCs, and one PWC TMCC w/Pullmor's...
Only reason I am considering the CC F3's is that I really need a NYC F3 AA set from Lionel with TMCC and/or Legacy and can motors, but cannot find any...so Pullmor and TMCC here we are again.
I have them all and love them, but the GG1 has been an issue. 1 motor seems to run better then the other. I need to re open it up and look, and the Railsounds does not always correspond to the train moving.
I have them all except the Berk, the Turbine and the GG1 get the most run time.
Here is are my thoughts:
The Hudson, while pretty good sounds, has lost my interest due to other, better-detailed scale offerings. I know its a bit weird, but this is a scale model in dimension, but very plain in terms of add on detail. It never did or was supposed to be a copy of the 700e, but still scale. It was not the best Hudson offered by Lionel, either in postwar years or today.
The F3's run fine, but the colors just don't do it for me and 60 years later, I can see why the Santa Fe (still) out sells anything and everything else. There is just too much other stuff on the market that out shines what this item can do.
The Turbine and the GG1 are not intended to be scale products, but rather, updates of the best post war era items and are the best of the best that was available at the time of production.
The GG1 has two motors where the original had one. The decoration is very close to the original WITH the addition of sounds and TMCC control.
The Turbine has the added back/cab detail, great smoke and the best Turbine sounds to date. I have heard the new, scale Turbine and I think this model has the better sounds.
All of these engines do get run and none have had any problems. I did take the battery out of the GG1 though.
In my opinion the Turbine and the GG1 still have "staying power" compared to what is available today. For some reason, the Hudson and the NYC F3's just are not as interesting to me and my guests that are somewhat knowledgeable about postwar production.
Hope that helps.
Charlie
I have the Berk, the Turbine, and the F3s. I think if I were to only keep one of them, it would be the Turbine. It fits my postwar style layout the best of them, and the smoke and sounds are really good.
That said, I am still planning on getting the other two some day.
ZWPOWER13:
I have the GG1 that they made just before the Century Club came out. It acted like one motor was underpowered compared to the other too. It ended up being one of the magnets in that truck was rubbing the inside of one of the wheels. Perhaps you'll be lucky and it will be something similar (and free to fix too!)

Are the sounds different in the 2 types of tenders offered for the Turbine?
For example, it comes with one as "Lionel Lines" and the other as "Pennsylvania Railroad".
There was a second tender offered for the turbine as a separate sale item. Be careful if you buy via the internet or EBay. Some folks appropriately offer the separate sale turbine tender all by itself. I wouldn't want to buy a tender (only), thinking I purchased the engine and tender.
Thanks guys, I ended up getting the Century Club Turbine "Mint in unopened box and sealed" for $360
