Line Item#6-38616;    My Lionel TMCC Mikado stopped chuffing after a derailment. I noticed the tether is damaged with all four wires having some insulation damage. I tried to use liquid tape but I'm not sure I'm even looking at the right area. What is the function of the tether? Do the chuff inputs go to the tender sound card?  I also noticed I cannot trigger the crew talk with the cab-1. I do get the steam blow off after shut down so I figured the sound board is functional. Any inputs on how to test would be greatly appreciated! Silent Coastie!!!

P.S. Whistle, bell, & directional works fine!

It's interesting you get the whistle, check the setting of the RS/SS switch, it may have gotten bumped into SS.  That just gives you the whistle and bell, the RS setting gives you all the sounds.

Not to sound too much like a TMCC novice, but where is the RS/SS switch?

Sir: I realized the Sound / No Sound must be the RS/SS switch. Thank you. I now have every thing except chuffing, but I have always had issues with this engine...smoke, chuffs etc.  I know I tried that RS/SS switch in both positions before I repaired the tether so  I guess repairing the tether must have done some good!  Thanks again for the help! Don't know about the chuff..this engine just sounds at idle all the time and the smoke works when it feels like it!

The chuffing, presuming everything else is working, is most likely the chuff switch in the locomotive.  It's activated by the lever that pumps the piston in the smoke unit.  It looks like the shot below, though it might be black or brown, but it'll have the same shape, terminals, and actuation lever.  Many times a tweak of the lever (slight bend) will bring back the chuff.

Since you have issues with smoke as well, maybe the lever is simply binding.

You nailed it! Chuff switch was it. A little bend and it's chuffing away!
