Hello,I am looking for 1 or more of the F3 Shells produced by The Hudson Company that were reproductions that looked kind of like the boxes the postwar trains came in.I have recently found out that a whole set was produced by them, until Lionel forced productions of these shells to stop.

I also have been told that they were available at train shows in the 80's-90's,and people used to walk right by them!  Will pay good money for nice examples of these fine shells!!!

Contact me at:kennybcars@gmail.com if serious about selling 1 or 2 of these shells.

They were in production and 100's were made but the orders outnumbered the production capacity.  The owner just decided to solve the problem by taking peoples money and not delivering anything, a crime for which he received a three year paid vacation from the state for mail fraud. They also offered an F3 set that used Lionel logos and was being sued for copyright infringement back then. Good article here:

No problem. I guess that I've been in this hobby too long. The Hudson Products "Lionel" F3 set may be rare but who can say that those pirate sets are valuable. They are just repainted MPC engines and cars with the Lionel logos all over them. The last scale Hudson that I saw at a show was priced at $500 and no takers. It had nice detail but was made of a very soft pot metal or cast pewter. The story goes that the man who ran Hudson products took an original Lionel 5344 and made a silicon mold from it so that he could just pour in melted pewter (tin and lead) and form the cabs, the trucks and other parts. I may still have a Hudson products catalog somewhere and I'll try to find it. I was considering buying one of these engines but 1. the price was exorbitant and 2, the outfit seemed like a shady operation and as I suspected they were shut down after a few years. IIRC, they operated out of an old mill building in Attleboro , MA. One year at York I stopped by the table and saw the Hudson model. People were coming buy and complaining that their orders were not being shipped. One guy was so incensed that the company had his money for nine months and not delivered, the seller at the table just handed him on of the two display units just to keep him quiet so that he could keep the scam going.

Doesn't sound too different than Lionel doing a preorder now, with people sometimes paying a deposit, and taking ~4 years to deliver

I don't recall seeing any for sale at any of the train shows I attended in the 1980's or 1990's.
That written, it does not surprise me that the demand for these items was low. I think people were more interested in obtaining genuine Lionel product, whether it be original Lionel Corp stuff, or Modern era Lionel. I don't think folks would have gone for such an item unless it was made by "Lionel".
There is probably more interest now. I wouldn't mind having a set, but I don't think I'd be willing to pay very much for them.

Pretty much the whole story here

I can see why LIONEL (as they awoke from their 70's slumber and started getting serious about their brand) - might not be pleased!

LIONEL did the same exact thing a few years later to my uncle who had been reproducing service literature - they ended up making him stop production, but allowed him to sell his remaining stock (although - at first they wanted all of it sent to them!)

Sorry, if my want of one or two of these shells, which were available at train shows many years ago, has violated your code of ethics...This is exactly what is wrong with this country right now. People are too busy playing policeman or social justice warrior to even see what the true problems really are.

If Lionel would have had enough sense to make the same kind of shells I would have bought them from Lionel.  In no way did I mean to offend you.I really don't see a reason for you to be.I just love the way they look like the old boxes.

Why would this bother you enough to cut me down for wanting a couple of these?

In other words,MIND YOUR OWN BUSINESS!!!

A train is a train is a train.Apparantly, the editor did not find it to be in violation of any of the forum rules, since this is a very, very old post. If someone made another version of the Santa Fe F3's would they be bootleg also? Since when are we limited to talking about only certain companies on the forum?

By the way,I STILL AM LOOKING for a set of these shells. If ANYONE can duplicate what they looked like,I am willing to pay for it.

I have been looking so long,I think I am ready to just paint a shell Lionel Orange, and have the decals custom made. If I do,I will post photos of them on the forum, after all,I wouldn't want to promote "BOOTLEGGING" or RUMRUNNING here on Ogaugerr!!!

What a joke!!!!  And this is all just supposed to be fun.

It was copyright infringement ,and believe me the guy PAID for what he did.Tell me you never bought a T-shirt OUTSIDE of  concert when we were younger.Yes, they were bootleg, but you still wore that shirt until it fell apart and promoted the band you went to see, who's OFFICIAL TOUR SHIRTS were way overpriced at $30-$40.00!! I got mine off the guy in the parking lot for $10.00,that way I could get a friend who couldn't be there a memory of a show they wished they'd seen.  Have you ever taped a song on a Boombox,or downloaded one from Napster, while the getting was good??

am a collector of certain things I think look great,I initially had no idea that Lionel did not produce the shells.I don't care if Ricky Ricardo made them, they look great and I still want a set!!!!And now I want a Club Babalu t shirt also.!!!!!

Again, everybody's a Cop, Lawyer,Judge or protester these days ,or a anti-constitutionalist,while they do nothing to fix things, just moan and point the finger at other people, while our proud nation is being divided, just the way the Globalists want it to be.( I honor all of the genuine Police,Judges and Military for their sacrifices they make daily to try to keep order in this crazy world)

FInd something better to do with your time than Complaining  about a guy looking for a couple O gauge train shells!!

Yours Truly,Kenny Baughman

Make America Great Again!!!And just enjoy running your trains, and Thank God You and this hobby are still alive.!!!

I remember those F3 shells at the 'Old Monroeville " Greenberg days in the 90's I had a shell in my hands Very nice but silk screened all the way . It was a GREAT looker but in your hands you could see the difference  compared to Lionel's F# . I asked the dealer if they where Lionel  ... from what I recalled he said they where...  I passed on a set . no regrets. Later through the years , I ended up buying that Lionel Set with the diesel and  all the freight cars looking blue and orange with Lionel blue logo and words on them .. Nice set I think that was Lionels response to the Huston Products.. DANiel

They weren't "bootleg merchandise" - heck - Lionel sold him the blank shells...it was just about copyright issues - using Lionel's old box colors/style/logo - and this was around the time Lionel brought back the old color scheme and box styling - so no surprise they weren't happy.

Its not much different than sending your F3 Shells to Len Capparelli for a custom repaint...its still a Lionel F3 - just with a unique paint job...

A lot of collectors and hobbyists weren't that happy with LIONEL during the MPC-era - so some took matters into their own hands.

Around this time, my uncle also produced a line of F3 frames and aprons - but he had to make them a certain percentage different - which required the buyer to drill and tap their own screw holes. You can identify these by the "TJN" embossed in the frame.

I have had 2 of these sets. The first set I bought at York in 1984 sold it when I sold trains to buy my Corvette. I always wished that was one thing I did not sell.

I was lucky to find another set a few years ago. I have double A units the tank car, reefer and caboose.  I will past some pictures later today.
