So my continuing re-education of Lionel Trains has prompted me to ask another question. I saw this on Ebay. Doesn't this still need a transformer to operate ?

Yes you still need a transformer for power. That is a hand held unit to control the train once the transformer is turned on........... Paul

Sorry for the lapse in the reply. I was out. Anyways I think with these sets Lionel is making the Hand held is the control unit. I run Legacy and that has a separate base unit. Not knowing when your engine was made when Lionel first did this the hand held unit would only control the engine it came with. Later they made the hand held unit able to handle three engines. ............................Paul
The handheld is indeed the control unit - its function is the same as the more-elaborate CAB-1/CAB-1L/CAB-2 for the TMCC/Legacy systems.
It is my belief (I do not own any) the LionChief locos/sets all come with a small wall-transformer for power. This is sufficient for their intended use - but you can put it on your "regular" track/transformer layout, too, and run it with the handheld that came with it.
