I am looking into one of these units and was wondering just how loud they are when operating.
I realize there have been several re-issues/remakes since the original PW 352. Are all the re-issues solenoid based or do some use a quieter DC can motor. If yes, any idea the year or model # when DC was introduced.

Can't answer all the questions, but the original postwar one is loud, but not crazy. It's comparable to the gateman or something of that nature and not the 397 coal loader. It needs to use very little power, though, otherwise it's way too strong.
The modern remakes are very quiet.
I have one that was probably cataloged in the early 2000's and it's smooth, quiet and reliable. Can motor driven.
Thanks all. Does anyone have a Lionel model #/SKU for a DC powered unit which I understand may have come out in the very late 80's. Or were they all solenoid powered at that time. Thanks
All modern era icing stations after the 2306(early '80's)are DC motor driven. I believe the first one was the 12847.
Rob, I am looking at a 12703 so that would be solenoid - circa 1983 with the 2306 circa 1989. So basically, most anything from 1990 forward or thereabouts would be can motor/DC
I forgot about the 12703(1988), which is motor driven, and came after the 2306.
