I'm looking into buying one of the new legacy equipped gantry cranes. I use Lionel fastrack on my layout, Can I use tubular track to power the rails on the crane instead of buying the ross/gargraves track section for the crane. The hopeful end result would look like the photo attached. Thanks guys.  The reason I ask is because I want to use one track system throughout my layout It would look funny (to me) to have gargraves track on the passing siding and Lionel Fastrack on the rest of my layout.

I don't remember where I saw it, but there is a video somewhere of someone making the gantry track out of Fastrack. I was thinking it was a Lionel youtube video, but I am not certain that it was? Memory ain't what it used to be... Maybe someone will know of it and post a link, if you are interested. Otherwise I don't see why your tubular method would not work.

Any idea when we will be able to get these gantry cranes? I have had one ordered for well over a year now, and maybe closer to two years. I think they were due last fall if I remember correctly.

Hey all,

it was Bill Schmelk who wrote the article in either the Lion Roars (LCCA publication) or a previous Lionel-Gram. He basically ran som Fastrack straight through a bandsaw to create a single rail with roadbed.

we did not tool a special piece of fastrack for the crane due to the high unit cost required to offset a very unique section of track.

thanks,

Mike
