I think this was a topic sometime ago, but my limited search did not result in any new findings.

I have the above mentioned Legacy engine and I can't seem to keep a smoke unit or fan in this engine.  I have probably had a tech replace 3 within a few hours of running.  My most recent one was last Christmas and tonight when I decided to put it in on the track, it shorted out and is now giving me 2 quick flashes of the cab light.  Has this problem been fixed with these units? I do remember reading several threads that mentioned that Lionel had received a bad batch of these.  Not sure if this is true, but with my experience, I would say that there is some truth to that!  All of the fans were extremely noisy.

If anyone has an update on this or can't point me to a thread where it is discussed, I'd appreciate it.  I think I might try to fix this one myself as I would love to learn how to work on the modern stuff (if it's not too difficult).

Thanks so much.

Top suspects are pinched wires when things short out, I see that all the time when I open stuff up.  I recently ran across one where the smoke resistor was firmly wedged against the side of the smoke unit, that took out the smoke regulator board.  Harry and I both have that Legacy K4 locomotive, no smoke problems in ours.

Other than a run of bad smoke motors, and the occasional smoke regulator giving us a thrill, I haven't seen an inordinate number of smoke failures.  90% of the problems are overfilling or letting them run dry.  Occasionally, the Legacy smoke controllers go to board heaven, but not that often.

No some of the new legacy can short out even with switch off.  It usually is one of the elements touching the smoke chamber, but as John states also pinched wires.

Sometimes the short can be intermittent because it comes and goes as the element heats up and expands, making contact with the chamber.

TMCC with switch off limited power to the smoke unit.  Legacy is a totally different design.  G
