The module loads the Legacy information about the set, both units if you will. You program the non-powered the same way you did the powered unit according to the manual. If you're running just the AA without a powered B unit you assign both units the same number so they run as a single unit. It's all in the manual.

I program both with the same ID.

I may be wrong, however, I think you open the program switch on both units and set them as the same engine.... Like Eng 22 or whatever you prefer. Then, set the switches to Run, turn off the power for 10 seconds.... Turn the power  back on and address the engines for 22, or whatever, and push the aux 1 button and the engine should come on.  Then, take the Cab 2 and place the engine module into the slot for the Legacy information. After you set this into motion, turn off the power for another 10 seconds. Now, turn on the power and address the engine 22, or whatever, then press the Icon for Legacy start up.....Wow, front coupler should open, and rear coupler on the dummy unit should open.  Also, directional lighting should work.....If this fails, read the instructions.  WOW...

Doesn't matter to your answer, but I was trying to figure out what engine you were talking about. Southern Pacific, not Santa Fe.

You are right, I have up to now only collected Santa Fe engines so this is my fist non Santa Fe, it is indeed the Southern Pscific.

The problem is it is not really in the manual.  On page 10 of the manual that came with my set it said the following: "For operation in the Legacy or TMCC environment you will want to give each unit a unique ID#.  Then on page 11 it talks about setting up a lash-up.  By the way I have tried both methods of setting these up.  If I use the same ID# for both the backup light (rear of A unit) is always on the dummy A while in forward.  If I give both a unique ID# that is not true, but when I open the rear coupler (front coupler on the dummy A) it opens but you no longer hear the coupler opening sound.

I had similar problems with a William engine that had been returned to the store with a broken coal load and a note inside from the previous buyer.  It was returned and the store apparently didn't check it out.  I see situations like this frequently at Home Depot when someone takes a product back, doesn't bother to look inside the box and the product is either damaged new or obviously used.  Bought a two pack of drill batteries that were worn out and really beaten up.  I always look at any product from HD that appears to have been opened.
