What is the significance of "Must contact Lionel to order" being listed along with the part number on a Lionel website parts diagram?
I'm thinking of buying a diesel engine that was delivered in 2010 or so, and more than 25% of the parts list this, instead of allowing me to order the part.

As far as I know, it means that either that there is only a very limited supply of parts available, and/or you must return the defective part to get a replacement (you still have to pay).
I would add that this is a common restriction on certain Vision Line parts. What model are you trying to order for?

Yes ..... a Vision Line genset.

Right, I thought it might be that or the VL Evo cataloged at the same time.
I think that Lionel protects its VL/Legacy electronics and investment in tooling by by restricting access to certain parts. Also you are meant to send VL engines to them for service. So not every part in this very complicated model is freely available. I've got a few things for mine but have never tried replacing things like smoke units or the extensive cab and body details.
