I ordered 24 of the 3 packs Ed. That's 72 and I might be a few short, but that will get me close. I love those things, they're so simple. Not sure what kind of track you're using, but they're made for classic O and 027. The little feet catch on the tabs on the ties that grip the rail and keep them from sliding. I use GarGraves, so I put some small screws behind them to anchor them in place. If you'd like to see my layout, click on the link in my signature.

How many do you need? Sounds like Bob G has a good deal there.

Ed, Be careful what you buy. I purchased some brown plastic bumpers Lionel p/n 6-12717 a few years back on Ebay. They appeared to be new-old stock made in China for Lionel LLC in the 1998- 2003 time frame. Looked in perfect condition at the time but recently while reassembling my layout after a move they are very brittle an literally crumble in your hands when installing them.

Eliot,

This is the 1st that I have viewed your post of your progress.   Now I know why you would need so many bumpers

All I can say about your layout is  "incredible" and that probably doesn't describe it well enough.  I read your story and I am glad you got past the cancer issue.  I am quite familiar with how cancer can set you back and the struggle to get back in form following it.   I also think it is terrific that you re-engaged with the layout and have made such amazing progress.

I sure wish I lived closer as I would absolutely love to see it in person.  I will be following your progress and wish you the best.

You are right.  Discussion about some cheap bumpers and you have a new fan as a result.  Looking forward to the updates.  There is a downside.  When I look at your progress for a month, and compare it to my progress (or lack thereof) for a month, it leaves me thinking maybe I'd have been better off collecting stamps or something.

Another option is to make your own bumper using spare Gargraves RR ties.  This video makes a bumper with a light but you could just as easily thrown several together without lights.

I've used the same technique to make switch signals (attached).  The parts list for the pictured signal is two LEDs, two resisters, wire and left-over Gargraves RR ties.  A zip tie at the base was used to keep the wires neatly together.
