I seriously doubt you'll end up using existing holes, but shouldn't be a major issue.  Here's the AC Commander and a RailSounds motherboard with the audio and P/S boards mounted.  This was my upgrade of the Phantom locomotive to dual motors, they should be positioned about like most dual-motored PW engines.  I do believe the Phantom is a bit wider than many.

I was thinking of a flat piece of aluminum mounted to the battery bracket holes.

John that is very clean install, looks like it fits just right.

Shawn, I mounted my command board to a L shaped bracket made from aluminum and mounted the bracket to the cavity of the fuel tank....

Ok, Started to upgrade a set of Santa Fe conventional classics after some advise by fellow members. As the previous poster mentioned the older battery well. Now, replaced by a speaker in the frame casting is cover by a die cast plate. It is then attached to the body using 4 screws.

I just ordered 3 of these plates from lionel. It appears that they will work in upgrading older engines with the battery hole in the casting. Plus, I will install one in the dummy A. It will give me a place to mount the circuit board for the coupler and rear light. It will also allow the option of moving the ERR sound board to the rear unit....

The area were the e unit is my need to be slightly cut away.
