Can these new accessories be wired the traditional way (wires, control button, transformer) besides being used as a plug and play?? I am not interested in the plug and play method.

You would think that you could just cut the plug off and splice the end wires? I do think that it was a good move on lionels part. I beleave alot of parents are turned off by the model train "toy". They just don't understand the wiring process. We all have been there at some point in our model train career. Trying to figure out what the heck goes where? Lionels (lion chief)and new (plug & play), just might be the trick to a new generation of rail fans?????
Look at the catalog description, I thought there was something in it about including a connecter for normal use

Yes, you certainly can just cut off the connector and hook up directly to the wire ends.
Alternatively, you can leave the connector on and use Lionel's 8" female pigtail power cable (6-82038) to connect a plug-n-play accessory to a non plug-n-play layout. It is shown on page 31 of the 2014 vol 2 catalog.
As a guy in the process of building a FasTrack modular layout, this is a great idea as it can be used in make the buildings and accessories pop on and off the layout with ease. Just tie the pigtail into the module's terminal strip. For a rookie, this is a great idea, however there are so many cheaper way to do this.
Does anyone know if the plug and play accessories are designed to operate on a full 18 volts if you run TMCC/Legacy? How do you maintain accessory operation speed if you run conventionally and vary the voltage?

The part I would not care for is the accessory going off/on, you power the track up and down. just like the headlight on the loco going brighter and dimmer as voltage is adjusted.

Would some of the plug-and-play accessories that draw track voltage have a fixed voltage regulator built in the circuit board to minimize the voltage fluctuation?

Lionel Accessories all work at different Voltages! Each one operates differently!
When I get a new one I always test it with a small Xformer to see what Voltage it works best at, then put a small piece of tape on it and write that voltage o n it! Then when I install it on my Layout, I know what Voltage to connect it to on my
Z Xformer!
