Lionel Scale Mikados Pushed Off To Jan 2015

I'm waiting for one too.

No real suprise given the "new" boiler tooling. The Sept delivery date seemed rather soon. I suspect it may get pushed back even further.

OK, I'll stop looking for it this month. Think of it this way - this gives us all time to 

save some more money so that we can buy 2 of them...just kidding. My L&N will

have to do, even though the Pilot Model would be sweet, also.

Be happy it's only late.  The word is a lot has been dropped.

I'm in the same boat. I back ordered the Legacy C&O E-8s and see they are pushed back until 1/15 and the 2 pack  of aluminum coach and dining cars until 3/15.

It is entirely possible that manufacturers will delay new models until there are enough preorders to make a production run profitable. This also leaves open the option to cancel a model if there is not enough buyer interest.

That's OK... this will give my wallet a break. Good news is they are only late.

I have a Great Northern on order. I'm not surprised it's pushed back, so I guess that's why I'm not disappointed. I'm with RickO in speculating that it won't be the last time it's pushed back. 

All that being said, I think it'll be worth the wait.

EBT Jim, I understand your disappointment concerning Lionel's shipping schedule, but

there is good News at the End of the Tunnel, it will be worth the wait. This being a newly tooled model by Lionel is probably why the delay. Running this in Legacy should be Loads of Fun. I have the L&N ordered.  

Now, has anyone visited the Lionel Booth at YORK and seen the engine? They should be able to share lots of news about upcoming shipments.

question catalog says new hvy mikados are 30" long

i have one of the scale mikados issued a couple of years ago and its 21" long

hvy mikados are 36 ft longer than what i have???

I'm 100% sure this was a misprint discussed long ago when the engines were first announced in April - they should be 20" instead of 30".

Personally, I'm waiting for the New York Central one to roll out, but I'm a very patient person under normal circumstances.

As far as the engine itself so far, the engine's unpainted pilot prototype was on display at York next to the gold Polar Express, and I'm sure that there are plenty who were able to talk with Lionel's people can answer some questions here.

This why I don't pre-order. It does nothing to meet my immediate gratification needs. It's sort of like asking a good looking girl out, and she says, "Sure. I'll need your credit card to assure you're good for the date. We'll make the date 6 months from today, but if something come up it might be a few months later." With that she gives me a smile and off she goes. And there I stand with a blank stare.

I can wait for the final shipping date.  I want the engine BUT I realy don't NEED it.  So when it comes, my money is ready for it.  BUT, I want the Milwaukee Road version, not some obscure RR that only had a couple in real life.  So, maybe I can expect my engine in about a year or so.  Hopefully, I'll still be around to enjoy it.

(the Milwaukee Road version is not even in their catalog, as yet, even though the Milwaukee had more of this class of engine than any other RR.)

Schematic drawing in "Southern Steam Power" shows Southern's Ms-4 Heavy Mikado [engine 54' and tender 29'] as 83' long. The USRA design was the Ms-4's prototype.

The heavy mike was Southern's mainline freight locomotive for 30 years,  1923-53.

Is Lionel importing a Southern Ry version of their heavy model??

I did a little research on L&N Mikados. Their J-4's were the ones that included #1757 (#1750 - 1769), which Lionel has numbered their heavy Mikado.

Though I could not find an overall length, I found the overall wheelbase (engine and tender) to be 71.79 feet. That should make the overall length in the 83 ft area. So the Lionel Heavy Mikado should be near the 21" mark.

 The Southern Ms-4 Mikados's wheelbase from, pony truck to rear tender axle is 71'-11".

As far as the catalogs state, Lionel is not making a Southern roadname yet, but there is heavy promises that Lionel will be offering it in many more roadnames in the near future.

I was just looking at the Nassau site, new MTH catalogue, and it occurs to me that

this delay in my L&N Lionel Mike makes me more likely to reserve one of the new

MTH B&A J2 Hudsons...thanks, Lionel! (But, Mr Wolf, I remain disappointed that

your NYC J1/J2 smokebox door remains incorrectly contoured.)

Such a Byzantine hobby; if I do the above, it may actually put both locos - and payments

due - closer together. Somebody help me. (And, of course, can I resist a future Southern version of the Heavy Mike? Not bloody likely, as they say Over There.)

I wouldn't get to 'wrapped around the axle' on catalog locomotive lengths-the catalogs also says a BB is the same length as a Challenger 

I'm not a math major but know that isn't possible.  And since I own them both, I know they aren't the same length.

The folks making/proof reading the catalogs are human and make mistakes like many of us. Especially me, just ask my Ol' Lady!!!!

I wouldn't assume anything until you see the model. They used images of the Dreyfuss with PT tender from the previous release. The current release has better detail and paint worthy of the best 2 rail brass offerings.
