I have a Lionel Odyssey "ten Wheeler" 6-28098. It has a "clanking" sound coming from a lever in the smoke unit the controls the smoke "puff". I need to remove the boiler and cab to access the lever.  I'm looking at 6 screws (all the same size and type) that appear to hold the boiler/cab to the frame.

Has anyone done this procedure on this type of Lionel engine?  I'm trying to avoid having to remove the cylinders and valve gear in the process.

Thanks for any assistance!

I've got lots of Lionel products with "puffer" smoke units. In my experience, there is always a little bit of a clank or thud sound one each one. A friend used a small pad of felt to quiet the piston but if it is just your "typical" puffer clank, I wouldn't bother taking it apart and risking the damage to something internal.

If it is a very loud clank that is far worse than the "usual" sound, then that is another story....
