Nice review Eric.

I've always liked the idea of the Oil Can set, being the hardcore SP fan that I am, although Lionel's SD40T-2's diesels are a disappointment to me; too many prototypical issues with them (truck placement being way too far inward from the pilot steps & incorrect nose lights for the SP version being the main ones).

Might spring for a broken-up set with just the tankers and pull them with the MTH SD45T-2s as those are more accurate models.

The Legacy version of this set has been out for well over a year now -- perhaps even longer.  Shortly after I acquired mine, I grabbed the Lionel DD35A powered / dummy locomotive pair with matching SP paint scheme to use with the Oil Can set.

You might need to hunt them down a bit, but I'm pretty sure a couple Lionel DD35A's in SP livery can still be found in train shops.  They're very impressive units.  And as an added bonus, the dummy DD35A is one of the few Lionel non-powered units these days that has both front/rear electrocouplers as well as two (front/rear) smoke units too!

The DD35's look/sound terrific heading up a long line of TankTrain cars.     The cars from the Legacy set (made in China) are virtually indistinguishable from those in Lionel's TMCC set produced in 2003 (made in Korea).  The Legacy set can still be purchased in the upper $600's to low $700's at larger dealers today, but sellers on eBay are holding out for north of $2K for the original TMCC set that came with two powered locos and 8 Tanktrain cars.

Eric's review of the VL GenSet was the final push my friend and I needed to purchase one.

Me, too. I hope you try to run it through your smaller curves/switches in your yard.
