As Popeye would say "Faskinating" - I have the Forty Feet Below book (and had the video till someone borrowed and never returned it) of the Chicago Freight tunnels and the 2' railroad that served underground Chicago. The whole sixty miles or so of the thing was carved out of clay with knives. Neat stuff
Was the Cicago system powered with overhead, outside third rail or center third rail?

Chicago Tunnel was powered by overhead wire.
Illinois Railway Museum rescued a locomotive and ash car before the tunnels were sealed off after the Great Chicago Flood.
