I'm looking for a diesel engine that has forward-neutral-reverse as well as a whistle. I want to stay away from engines that have a start-up or shut-down process. Ease of operation is key. I recently picked up an RMT Bang and it really fit the bill. I'm just looking for variety. Any suggestions new or used would be appreciated.

Pontiac787,
Diesels have horns not whistles. You should look at Williams, they do not have sound, command, smoke so they are simple every day product. Very reliable as there is not much to break.

You said you like the RMT Bang. The BEEP and their GG1 are pretty good, too.
Theres a great deal on a Williams NW2 on the sell/trade forum. I have a few of them. They are hard to beat.

I do think Williams has Sound. True Blast Whistle/Horn and Bell. But as desired, no chuff/diesel roar and no battery required. Williams is the best bet for a more traditional O-27/O engine with the requested features. G
GGG,
You are correct, I forgot they had a horn and a bell. Again basic stuff no breakdowns.

I have an Lionel DEJ GP38 diesel with full train sounds, and I'll sell it to you cheap...
You can see / hear it here: http://youtu.be/UyE5NWd8bJA
I only have the engine, and was going to repaint it NYC, but haven't and probably won't.
email is in my profile.
Thanks,

PS - Some diesels had a Hancock air whistle.
Lionel GP-7, Burlington. Forward, reverse, horn, lights, two motors, magnetraction, great runner, strong puller. Have new one for $125.00 plus shipping.
Lionel sells an Alco R-S3 that is pretty nice, You could find one for under $100 if you look. They are basic starter set locos, some of them have horn sounds.
I agree, it sounds like all you need is Williams. Lots of choices.

Most Williams engines in their diesel line-up do have horns or sound units.
Some of the later production diesels, before the Bachmann buyout, may not have a horn.
The Crown Edition diesels have "Station Sounds" by QSI installed, has a station leaving announcement and horn/bell feature.
The Williams diesels do not have smoke.
If you buy a used Williams be sure it runs good before you purchase it.
Some of the internet retailers still have the older Williams before Bachmann and that is what I would buy, you will get a better deal(price wise) on the engine then a new Williams by Bachmann.

Thanks all for the suggestions. I will be looking into those Williams engines.
I have many Williams locos, excellent value. I added sound, wired the motors in series, and added thermistors for very smooth starts.
Many basic/simple locomotive 0 gauge diesels do exist. Cost is anywhere between $100 to $400 dollars. It really depends on many factors. Me.....I would go to EBay and look first. Then try some of the shows. If that doesn't pan out, I would venture into the local hobby shop and see if they have taken anything in on trade. Sometimes they do and one never knows what they may find.
Williams, as one member stated, is as basic as one can get these days. Anything more and you mind as well invest in a fully functional digital locomotive with all the bells and whistles. Happy hunting

The Williams/WBB NW2 can negotiate 0-27 curves. I have 6 of them. They are among my favorites. The original Williams NW2s seemed to have a greater selection of roadnames, too.
