Hello guys and gals.....

I will be receiving the early 1984 Williams Dreyfuss Hudson in few days from a very nice gentleman from Hawaii and would like to know any advices or tips in making this early Hudson run well using the original motor and gearbox.   I will be installing the Dallee # 400 E-unit and put in the front of the boiler if possible.   I have NO plans for sounds (don't need them) and to avoid using the tether collected between the engine and tender.   I have seen pictures of this type of model on ebay, there is no flywheel on it and has large size can motor #550 instead of the #385 Mahubuci (spelling) motors used in lot of engines today.   I think this is a good size motor for a Hudson.  Any tips in gearbox to fine tune it ?  What about the siderods and axle bearings ?  Its not a bad looking engine but just a plain Jane scale Dreyfuss Hudson and looks much better than the old Lionel 773's that's for sure !!!   I know some of you guys have this early Williams Dreyfuss Hudson and how do you like it and what kind of work done to it ?

thanks guys

Pretty sure I have the same loco.

As a runner mine needed nothing but a little cleaning and oil. It's all metal drive IIRC and while simple....a great model.

All my issues were with the locos looks. I added tender skirts, air pumps under the nose, NYC shield and new decals as the original were paper stickers.

The end result.......you should with any luck have a great loco no matter if you leave it alone or rework it.

Hello guys and gals

Does anyone have a Williams 1984 catalog where this early Dreyfuss Hudson is listed in ?   I am curious what it looked like in the catalog back then and perhaps take picture of it and post it here ?

I received My Williams Dreyfuss Hudson this morning and took it out the box.  I been inspecting the engine and tender today and surely enough it needs lots of JB weld metal epoxy to make the bodies (locomotive and tender) strong enough to be handled without falling apart !   I will have to wait until Weds to buy lots of JB weld epoxy as that's when we get paid then start doing some serious work on this poor budget Hudson.  Soon I will post pictures tonight (my time). UP-DATE... I been really busy this evening oh boy !! I had to re-tap the hole to the next size to 4-40 by 3/4" long machine screw as the original trailing truck boss hole was drilled at a angle at the factory !!  The trailing truck was binding when checking for clearances on the curve because of the screw that was crooked !!.   I am just started working on it as the first evening but have a long way to go!

THANK YOU SO MUCH DON !!!

As far as I know Williams did not made any catalogs in these years; I remember only adverts in Model Railroader with not very detailed black and white pictures for the 2 NYC Hudsons (Dreyfuss and non-streamlined) they made. I think the first nice catalog picture for Williams brass 3-rail was made for the PRR K4s in 1985/6 in this flyer. Later (1987 and on for some years) Williams trains were cataloged as part of the MTH tinplate catalogue, but the Hudsons were not in these catalogs.

The Williams Dreyfuss Hudson we used at the Bergen County Model Railroad club in the 1980s ( it is the same one you have) was beautiful but inaccurate versus the real engine. It looked so good we did not care about that. After all, we were 1980s 3-railers and thrilled just to have something different to run than Lionel repaints made from 1940s tooling.

Our problem was we could never get it to run right. It went back to Williams 8 times before we gave up and used it as a display piece for shows.

We did our own tweaking with the mechanism as well, but we never could get it to run well enough to use at shows reliably. Other owners of the Dreyfuss Hudson during the same time frame told us the basically the same thing with their experiences with the engine.  Later Williams brass engines corrected the reliability problems with the mechanisms of  the first two Hudsons  Samhongsa made for the company,  and their later brass steamers were accurate in outline and good runners.

I am going to guess from your e mail that you got your Dreyfess for a great price.  In that case, it is worth trying to get to that shiny gray beauty to run right because it is such a good looking steamer. the brass Dreyfuss  was important to the hobby because it was a step along the way to different and more realistic 3-rail engines.

I am writing this because after all these years that engine still provokes a strong emotional response.

Anyway, have fun reviving it.

Ed Boyle

When the 2 NYC Hudsons (Dreyfuss and non-streamlined) were advertised by Williams in 1984 I ordered both. They were nice engines running well on my then small 3-rail layout. When a couple of years later Weaver announced their Dreyfuss Hudson I thought this looked much better and I sold the Williams and "upgraded" to the Weaver version. The non-streamlined Williams Hudson I kept and it is still running well without any maintenance, making a special sound every now and then.

Besides the pilot what else do you need all the epoxy for? From the pics the rest appears to be OK.

Hello Norton......

Well I thought that the other parts would come apart and so I wanted to make it stronger by putting epoxy on the soldered seams INSIDE the boiler and tender body.  The tender steps are looses and the 2 plates that was soldered inside the tender body which the solder has broken off and is still on the frame. I thought this might be a chance for other soldered on parts to come off.   I was planning to put the Dallee e-unit inside the engine boiler (don't need sounds) so I can epoxy the tender body to the frame. There will be more pictures coming and will post in this thread.  If you have more questions or ideas please let me know.

I did some work today, removed the motor and gearbox out and hooked up the motor to run freely to "seat" the bearings and brushes on MRC D.C. pack for 5 minutes each direction for total of half hour. I took the gearbox apart to clean out the old grease, added new trust washer on the worm shaft , added fresh Red N Tacky then reassembled the gearbox and motor back on the frame.  I hook it up again on D.C. pack and gave it a spin for half hour forward and backward. It is running for first time since 1984, No mechanical bindings looking good so far. here are the pictures !!!

Hello Tiffany

That Williams Hudson, I am certain, is happy to be in your care. Thank you for posting photos. Good luck with your project. Keep us posted, y'hear?

Around 1990, Williams offered superb brass locomotives with excellent details and smooooth, reliable drivetrains, as Ed Boyle posted.

One of them was a NYC Niagara. It looked sleek and elegant and it ran like a Hamilton watch. I hope you can fine one to keep your Hudson company. And if someone had installed a QSI sound system around that time, it may have a special feature. Click on this link

Hello ReadingFan...

Thank you sir !!   I have long way to go to finish it.  I still have valve gear work as Williams assembled it very sloppy so I will try to tighten up the slop and main rod/ piston work too.   There will be more pictures coming.   I am starting to REALLY like this Hudson and felt sorry for it when it was poorly assembled and soldered.  Two parts came apart this evening which is the bottom plate of the cylinder block (the plate hold the cylinder block on the frame) and other part long straight strip holds the valve gear assembly in the rear.   I have my work cut out for me and hoping to finish rebuilding this Hudson by the end of March or sooner then comes painting.  I will try my best to nurse this poor engine back on the rails.  The motor and gearbox is good and running that part is done my goodness !!!

hello guy and gals

When I received this early Dreyfuss Hudson, it didn't have boiler lead weight.  Did early brass Williams models come without lead weights ?

I had the catalog for 1984 or thereabouts but I can't find it. It had both Hudsons, a peculiar Shark AB combo in NYC and Penn and lots of other things. I have the regular Hudson but haven't run it in years. A couple of guys were adding flywheels and I had that installed. It ran fairly well but I had trouble keeping the front truck on the track.

My non-streamlined Williams Hudson from 1984 came without a boiler weight and was bought new in 1984. It has a screw-hole which might be there to add a boiler weight. I do not have the Dreyfuss Hudson anymore but I assume that also came without a boiler weight.

IMG_20170305_140943IMG_20170305_141142hello guys and gals..(up-date 3/5/17)

I have more pictures coming and will post them here this evening.  I was sick for few days from mild food poisoning (peanuts) who knew ?  I have done more epoxy work on both engine and tender bodies, replaced the rear plastic coupler with all metal one, tender side frame ( it was bend and caused the wheel sets to fall out rather easy), got a new Dallee # 400 e-unit but not installed just yet.  The tender body was falling apart but able to save it, so much from bad soldering my goodness !!  Let the pictures speak for themselives and if any questions please ask.  I  noticed that my Wal-mart tablet is not too good in taking larger pictures but it the best I could do for a 79.00 tablet LOL. Guys... I would  very much paint the whole Williams train in "The Royal Blue" colors like forum member BANJOFLYER's  American flyer The Royal Blue train.  I will be receiving a 99.00 dollar 4 car Williams 15 inch aluminum passenger cars soon to be pull by this Dreyfuss Hudson.

Tiffany, if there is no boiler weight, then that's the way it came. I never could run it so nothing was ever changed. 90% of the time it was in a box. Something would fall off if I pulled it out. Good luck. Don

Hello Don

I guess Williams never included boiler weights in their early years Williams brass locomotives.  But that is not a problem, I can add on "stick on weights" in the boiler.  I think that explains why the front driver having traction tires like the rear one does. Its not a problem.

Hello Train Doctor

Oh yes!!!, I could use a BETTER motor for it.  This Hudson deserves every chance it can get !!  The can motor that's on the frame now is size of 37 MM Dia. Hello guys and gals.......

Is Evan's still in business ? I am thinking of using a large 8MM LED warm white and 2 wire hook up (pick-ups and chassis) for headlight for this Hudson. The headlight hole Dia. is about 8.5 MM.  This Dreyfuss Hudson never came with a light bulb !!  Does Evans still sell those or someone else does ?  Is there such a thing ?

Hello AMCDave

I need to add a pair of air pumps casting, where can I get them ?  I would like to add them to my Dreyfuss  Husdon too and fill in the gap on the front of the cylinder block and cow catcher.

That engine is identical to the Lionel Smithsonian Hudson by the same builder. Its a bargain compared to the Lionel engine. Consider the remake of the diecast 700E at about the same time retailed for around $1500.

As late as 1989, the Williams SP Daylight was delivered without a boiler weight. I installed a cylindrical lead weight over the drivers that had been a reed block on an organ pipe, as it fit in the boiler nicely. Performance improvement was dramatic, so I called Andy Edelman, then with Williams, to inquire why they hadn’t included one. He said they had omitted weights because they feared these larger engines would be run too fast by kids, and the detail parts would be damaged when the loco rolled  over on a curve. I didn’t quite get it then, but I do now in light of the solder problems they apparently had with some earlier brass locos as mentioned in this thread.

I have done some more work on the Hudson this week and will post pictures in hour or so tonight.  The work I did  is repairing and epoxy the rear tender steps back on the frame,  made new thicker brass draw bar out of brass stock,  did some valve gear hanger work and back on the engine frame but took some adjusting to make it square to the frame as it was a mess because the factory drilled holes for it was off center thus make it crooked !!!,  Few other things done all this week.   I received my 99 dollar 4 car Williams aluminum passenger cars last Thursday and looks natural behind the Dreyfuss Hudson.  The cars are very well painted, but was not in "NYC" (they were out of stock) so choose the "Burlington" its really NICE and too nice to repaint them so I will just repaint the engine and tender to simple silver or aluminum color paint and decaled to "Blackhawk" Burlington route colors to keep the cost down and match it to the pass. cars.  Here are the photos guys.....

I been working on the Hudson's drawbar pin and shorten the tender draw bar for 072 curves this week.   I found out on testing the chassis on 031 and kind looks really bad when the rear cab swings too far out on the curves and decided to run it on 072 and looks lot better !!!      I am still waiting for the Pittman motor from the Train Doctor and when I receive the motor and will install it and put new Dallee E-unit on the frame.     Most of the mechanical work is done and what's left is the wiring, installing the Pittman motor and E-unit and LED for head light.    I am asking for help in picking the RIGHT color of silver or aluminum color paint that will match the Williams Burlington passenger cars I got almost 2 weeks ago.    The reason I took picture of the Visa Dome car as posted above and cannot tell if it is silver or aluminum color paint.   The cars are painted as upon close look, I see orange peels so it is painted.   I will be painting the just the engine and tender and decal it to match the cars in March (I meant April) my bad.   More pictures coming soon guys !!! ( up-date 3/19/2017) I will post pictures in half hour today !!  Guys, I didn't do much as I've been tired all last week and still waiting to hear from the train Doctor (Luke) about the shipping cost for the Pittman motor.   There is not much left to do except to paint.  I am afraid that the gearbox will not last long due to fact that ALL the gears including the worm is brass so I will check out gearbox replacement from NWSL guys.  The gear box is in good condition so I can run it in mean time and probably get a new gear box for it in few months.

Tiffany, way don't you re-decal the passenger car into New York Central? That would be easy and look fine. Dontbwash407b

Aloha Don.........

That looks easy to do !!  I thought the New York Central cars had to be painted gray and with gray pin stripes in middle like on the tender as that's a lot of painting work on 6 cars. The names "Burlington" and "Blackhawk" are tempo printed on the cars so how do remove that without having to repaint the cars ?  I do love the 20th limited paint style 2 tone gray and blue pin stripes but paying a pro-painter to paint the engine and tender plus 6 cars is probably out of my budget wise.  I am not a pro-painter like that but can do simple good paint jobs without messing up.   I can paint strips of brass and put NYC decals on the strips and epoxy the strips over the "Burlington and Blackhawk" names like the picture above and to leave the painted cars alone as that is a GOOD idea !!!   But still have to repaint the engine and tender though.   I just wanted to paint the train to look like postwar lionel would do, after all the Williams aluminum cars are lionel copies and the Williams early Hudson looks some what like a toy train and looks right at home with the aluminum 15 inch cars.  I DO love "postwar" style toy train look.  Should renumber the engine like #773,763,777 or 700 ?    MPC Lionel did use the numbers of 784, 783 black and 785 gray ,700-1 Hudsons  since this engine is a streamliner will # 793 look right for this engine ?   If you have some more ideas let's hear them

Tiffany, FYI to duplcate the black stripe with white letters above no painting is required. The whole strip is a decal. Evans Hobbycal has a white background. Its made to be used with an inkjet printer.

Simply create the text above in you favorite word processor, reverse the text and background colors and print. The printer will apply the black ink leaving the lettering white.  Then cut out the strips.

Hello Pete.....

Is it possible someone makes a foil tape with color background and "New York Central" printed on the foil strips ?  Then all have to do is cut each strip and stick it on the body of the passenger car ?   Like the postwar days as a preproduction foil strips ?

Hello guys and gals

I posted pictures of the latest work done on the Hudson a day or two ago and so far NO "likes" or "comments" of any kind ?  This Hudson must have been the very first early production in 1984 so it will have a lot of bugs in it just like a first model year new car being made and full of bugs in it.  It has been corrected and or fixed the problems (most of it so far).  When it all done, it will be a good "simple trouble free runner" like the postwar trains were of yesteryear.  That is why I am going through all this trouble to see if it can be done and so far it is coming out well.

Thank you for your kind words .  I am half way done and probably will paint the engine, tender in April. I wondered who make the best LED type bulb (bayonet base) for the Williams aluminum cars ?

Hi Tiffany:  I answered this on the Lionel/Williams passenger car question, but I'll repeat it here- Town and Country Hobbies have bayonet and screw base bulbs in bright white, warm white (matches postwar Lionel), and red & green, they are available singly and in packs of 50. I can't remember the price. I use them and have no complaints, and will be buying more at York next month. Buy a couple just to see if you like them.

Hello guys and gals........

I will post more pictures of the Pittman motor and Dallee E-unit and wiring installation soon as I been really busy this week.  Does anyone have a working Williams smoke unit with the board you like to get rid of as I would like to put it in my Hudson and do the fitting before painting.   I like mild smoking not heavy like the fan driven types as heavy smoking affects my breathing due to heavy asthma I have so must use machine for asthma attacks so fan driven smoke units are out.   This engine has 77.4 inch drivers so like to run it kind of fast 80 or so scale miles per hour like the real one does with the 6 car aluminum passenger set.  I will be getting a 11.5 to 1 ratio gearbox from NWSL soon but will use the one that came with the engine for now and Pittman motor speed is about 6400 RPM's @12 volts.

Hello guys and gals.

It been almost a long 2 weeks , almost busy everyday whew !!!!!!!! I been working very hard on this Hudson ( hardest part is stripping the tough 33 year old paint off) and got sick from the fumes of the stripper in last few days. The paint stripper is very toxic and expensive too. I had to buy 2 cans worth at total of 16 dollars and change but hope to never ever use this nasty stuff again and it did a very good job results.  I installed the Dallee board and Pittman motor , did the wiring work adding the fire box LED flickering light in orange color (Way cool !!!) and very bright 5MM LED for headlight !  Since the Williams passenger cars are Lionel copies so I added on a water scoop under the tender just like the Postwar streamliner tenders have.  It really looks good on this brass tender.  This engine really looks old school.  I am still working on the air compressors for this engine and other works still need to be done before painting. The painting will be done as the weather permits as its suppose to rain pretty much this week so will have to wait until next week hopefully.   I purchased 10 feet of Lionel "super flex" wire and 18 volt LED bayonet base bulbs for the 6 aluminum passenger cars ( Did the Vista Dome car last week with flex wire and LED bulbs) will take photos of the cars soon.  It will be a very nice "postwar" style " train.  Here are in the photos folks...

Terrific progress on your Hudson!  With regards to the smoke unit, the Hudson originally came with a Seuthe smoke unit.  I have 2 engines that use these units.  They produce a lower volume of smoke that is not as offensive and may be what you are looking for.  My big piece of advice however is to only use the smoke fluid that is recommended for these units.  The usual smoke fluids burn too hot and will burn out the unit (I found that out the hard way!).  Other retailers may offer these units and fluid, but I purchased mine from DCC Trains.  Here is a link for both the replacement units and fluid:

Hello rjsmithindy

Thank you for your kind words, it has made my day today !    I have 2 more things that needed to be done before painting which is #1, adding boiler weight to the front of the engine to "balance the engine" so that the front first driver will have same amount of weight as the rear third driver for better tracking over the switches and crossings as right now the engine is "rear" heavy ,"light" front.  And # 2, make mounts for the 2 cast metal air compressors from Bowser as this Hudson didn't come with those.   Thank you for the link of the smoke unit as it is just what I been looking for.

Hello Fred.....

Thank you for your kind words, it helps   I wonder how to paint the inside of the cab and is not removable using the rattle can spray paint ?

Hi Tiffany,

That's nice work.

Do follow rjsmithindy's advice on the smoke fluid.  It is somewhat thinner than water.  And check for this.  Was there a board connected to the smoke unit?  The ones we used at Right of Way had to be run on 5 volts.

As far as the cab goes you could use swabs and lacquer thinner but it still would be a lot of work.

Looking forward (as you are I'm sure) to seeing the finished product.

Hello rjsmithindy

I am interesting putting one in but not sure in how to control the voltage to not go over the 10/14 volt range.  Is there a board to control the voltage to 12 volts max. to the smoke unit ?   I t may require the voltage up to 14 volts to get the train up to speed to say about 60 to 80 scale MPH ( passenger train speed) ?  Any ideas as I do want to put the Seuthe unit # 6  (10/14 volt AC/DC) model in this Hudson.

Thank you for your kind words sir !

Tiffany

Hi Tiffany, the engine originally came with a seuthe unit in the smoke stack.  If the engine was hardly run (as I seem to recall earlier in the post), you may want to just purchase the fluid for now and test the original unit. Otherwise, if a new one is preferred or needed, I would consult with the retailer for the best unit to purchase.  I did the same several years ago, and they were able to direct me to the best purchase.  Unfortunately I am unable to locate any receipts, etc., or I would share which I had purchased.

Hello rjsmithindy

When I received the engine , it didn't have headlight bulb or smoke unit not even a boiler weight but just a reverse unit in the tender and motor , gearbox in the engine that's it.   It was pretty much bare bones !!!!!!!  I think it must have been a very early first production run.  The smoke stack hole on top of the boiler is big enough for Seuthe smoke unit so that is good news (no cutting required) !!

Rob, the engine was never run, not one inch. It just didn't run out of the box. Not sure if it had a smoke unit. What it did do as Tiffany found out is fall apart. They made a second run of these engines that were much better. Tiffany, I think I have a weight out of an old Lionel engine if you still need one I will send it. Don

Aloha Don !!!!!!!!

That would be nice but if it cost 45 dollars to ship it then its better to NOT ship it.   I never thought it would cost such a arm and leg to ship from Hawaii !!!  If it is CHEAP to ship it then thank you as I can use the weight for this Hudson.  This time the Hudson is no longer falling apart so far so good.

Thank you, Don

Hello guys and gals.......

Oh boy its been a very busy weekend and first day of the week.  I have done some more work on the Hudson such as installing the LED's for the trail end roof of the Williams Observation car and adding brass washers as a spacers (6 per side) between the siderods and the main rod.  I think it looks better as to fill in the huge gap between them.  The boiler screw is tiny bit too short as if its loosen by a half a turn then the whole chassis will fall out so I got some 4-40 by 1 1/4 inch long machine screws and retapped the hole to 4-40 size (extra longer screw won't hurt).  The original screw is 1 inch long, better safe than sorry to have to pick up the broken chassis from the floor.  I thought of a idea to use a short piece of PCV pipe and fill it with fishing weights to get a few OZ of weight as a boiler weight ( I haven't gotten the fishing weights yet).  And finally made a brass "U" bracket for the cast metal air compressors from Bowser for the front of the engine and spray primer then paint, it came out pretty good.  I had to drill and tap 2-56 machine screws to mount it on the frame.   Its almost done then body painting is next as the weather permits (again) so here are the photos........

I sprayed primer the bodies today and the results is really better than I expected !!!  In few days I will spray paint the silver on.  I made a 8 OZ weight using 2- 4 OZ cannon ball lead weights and epoxy it in the short section of the PCV tube to make into a boiler weight for the front of the engine. I ordered 20 feet of super flex wire for the roller pick ups of the passenger cars.  I cut out 2 pieces of gray plastic to put the "Burlington Route" decals on that I ordered from Dave of LBR last night as it is in custom size (smaller one for the nose of the engine and larger one for the back door of the observation car).  I should be finishing the Hudson this month as there is not much left to do for it.   Here are the pictures guys !!!

Hello guys and gals......

I wondered who makes "glass" flat lens in .290 Dia. by .0625 thick ?   I need one to put in this Williams Hudson's headlight.  The headlight lens that came with the Hudson is plastic and is poorly made and has glue on it, its messed up. Any ideas guys ?

No luck in the glass lens ? Oh well.  Today is a beautiful day for painting so decided to paint the engine body and boy it turn out well and it showed lots of metallic sparkles in the sun as its drying !    I drilled mounting holes on the tender body front and back and made "L" brackets for it to mount the tender body to the tender frame.  I also made a ground tab to install a high pinched whistle sound ( I hope its LOUD enough) from Dallee as one wire is for the ground and other for the pick-ups.  I haven't gotten the sound unit and roller pick ups for the tender yet as will purchase those items in June.  I will paint the tender body tomorrow. After the tender body is painted, then the gloss clear coat for the decals after that the final gloss clear top coat in few days.  I  didn't take any more pictures of the passenger cars as all I did was changed to bayonet base LED's bulbs so that nothing. Here are the pictures guys.

Surely someone in this forums can help with the lens ?  Glass, flat .290 Dia. by .0625 thick for headlight on this Hudson, anyone ?

(up-date 5/15/17) Another beautiful day to paint the tender body so it was done about hour ago, check out 8 new pictures of the tender body.  I am still waiting for the decals from Dave of LBR.  He said that he will ship the custom size "Burlington Route" decals by Thursday this week.  That will give more time for the bodies to be totally dry by then.  Guys, I know this Dreyfuss Hudson belongs to NYC but there are many of those engines models from other makes that look better than this lowly Hudson. This engine has no chance to complete with the other makes so decided (few months ago) to paint it in Burlington colors because it is simple and make it a "one of a kind" engine for this Burlington road name. This Williams lowly Hudson does have looks from the postwar era. and pulling postwar style Williams aluminum passenger cars as they really look good together almost like a matched streamline style set that is so "why not" make it different or special !  I am still looking for glass lens for the Hudson.

(up-date 5/16/17) I decided to put the bodies on the frames to see what it looks like and wow it blew me away !!  few hours later, decided to hand paint the handrails , ladder on the engine and tender semi-gloss black and this is the first coat for the evening.  Tomorrow I will paint the second coat on handrails, check out 13 last pictures of this evening.  My goodness time flies when having fun and surely worn me out !!

Imitate me, just as I also imitate Christ. 1 Corinthians 11:1 NKJV

Hello guys and gals..........

I just added 13 new pictures of the Hudson this late evening ( did some black painting on handrails, ladder) putting the bodies on the frames to see what it looks like.   The pictures are posted on yesterday's post.  The Hudson will soon be ready for the lens but I don't know where to find one a glass one and a smaller MV red lens for the tender's rear back up light.

Hello Fred....

Thank you sir for your kind commets   The engine is almost finish just add decals, clear coat , sound system from Dallee (hopefully loud enough), roller pick ups for the tender and smoke unit in June.  Then in July, MTH engineer / fireman figures with seat and better gearbox from NWSL , paint the driver centers silver with black rims, LED's headlight, MV "red" len for the back up in tender's headlight. and finally glass lens for the engine if sooner.

Well today I looked in my tool chest and found a optical lens from scanner that we (my husband and I) took apart few years ago saving machine screws and small washers. The glass optical lens is in very close size to the plastic lens that was glued to the headlight housing of the Hudson and was removed for priming/painting.  I got lucky because our Lord helped me (He told me where to find it), it is very close in size I needed and just trimming of the paint using X-Acto knife from the inside of the headlight housing lips.  I test fitted it to see what it looks like and will fit right in (after I spray clear top coat is done then trim to fit) , My goodness !!!  Here are the pictures guys.........

I decided to do some more work on the Blackhawk Hudson's tender today.  I cut a brass tubing short section with a red jewel of the same size at one end as the tender's back up light and epoxy the 2 pieces together and put it on the chuck of the power drill to round it a bit and smooth out the rough edges using fine sand paper. The red jewel and brass tube section slips INSIDE the back up light opening of the rear of the tender very nicely.   I did some silver paint touch ups on the handrail posts of the engine, black paint touch ups rear ladder of the tender too.   I received the "Burlington Route" decals from Dave of LBR yesterday.  The decals are of custom sizes thus smaller ones for the front of the engine and larger ones for the door of the tail end of the observation car.   I found out it best for the temp to be in low 70's for good spraying of paint or clear coating but at this hour 4:18 PM PST, it is in upper 90's so I will have to get up bit early tomorrow morning to spray the clear coat on areas where the decals will be placed on while its bit cooler in low 70's before it get too hot in afternoon.   When the decaling work is done then next is to spray final clear coat over the whole engine and tender bodies then finally time to glue or epoxy the lens in its place.  That would be all for the rest of this month until in June.  In June I will purchase smoke unit , sound unit from Dallee (HOPE it is LOUD enough) and roller pick ups assemblies from WBB for the tender.  In July, new NWSL gearbox, front flywheel and pair of engineer/ fireman figures already seated from MTH, paint the driver centers silver with black rims and probably be finish in July.    Guys,  I don't know why the C.B.& Q railroad call this train "Blackhawk" when the whole train is painted in silver when it should be called "Silverhawk" instead ?  I will post pictures in hour or so today.

Hello guys and gals.......

I just weighted the Blackhawk Hudson with the 8 OZ lead weight and no front and rear trucks and with the body, its weight is 4.538 pounds on a digital scale without the tender.  Is this kind of light for a 3 rail Hudson type locomotive ?  What does a die-cast Hudson weight such as a lionel 773 and others ? I know that the heavier the engine, more wear and tear on the drive train and the flanges as well.

hello Pete..........

Well it doesn't matter anyway as this Blackhawk Hudson has 4 traction tires and they are in good shape for its 33 year old age (no dry rot) !! .   I have weight "balanced" the engine (equal weight on front 1st driver and rear 3rd driver) and there is about 2.269 pounds on each of the 2 driver axles as the middle driver is barely touching the top of the rails.  The total locomotive weight without front pony truck and rear trailing truck is 4.538 pounds (chassis and body) with 8 OZ lead weight.  It should have no trouble at all pulling 6 Williams 15 inch aluminum passenger cars on 072 track.   I am looking for a extra Williams "coach" 15 inch aluminum passenger car in "Burlington " road name, does anyone have one for sale new in the box ?   Since the Hudson is light which is ok and easy for me to handle it when taking it out of the box and putting it on the track.  I just thought it should weigh more to area of like 6 pounds and up.

I did some work this past weeknd and I added pick up axle wriper springs for the "ground" pick up. Later this week , will order a pair of roller pick ups for the tender as it never came with them.  And will be ordering a Willliams steam sound unit "True blast 2" ,lot cheaper than the better steam sounds unit from Dallee but good enough for me.  I painted the tail end skirt of the observation car's fake coupler black as the rest of the couplers of the train is black so why not.  I put on "Burlington route" decals, Large logo decal on the tail end back door of the Observation car and smaller logo decal on 8MM by 12 MM sheet aluminum for the decal to be placed on but first had to slighty bend the small sheet of aluminum to fit on curved nose of the front end of the engine.  I will be getting more clear coat spray can later this week then do more decaling on the engine and tender.  Only four more things to be done to go, 1) Seuthe smoke unit,   2) a pair of engineer/ fireman figures with seats from MTH,  3) up grade gearbox and flywheel/shaft coupling from NWSL and finally 4) paint the drivers centers silver with black tires and silver bearing caps on the tender/ trailing trucks.   For now here are the pictures of the work that was done few days ago.

Hello texastrain

Thank you for your very kind words !! .  That really means a lot to me .  I think this is "one of a kind" train as we OGR members know that C.B.&Q never had "Dreyfuss" Hudsons so it's "one of kind" (dared to be different).

Hello guys and gals

I have a problem well a big problem that is.  Last night about 2 am in morning it was about nearly 80 degrees outside so I decided to do some clear coat touch ups on the areas that I missed just prior to putting on decals.  I ruined it as the clear coat spray made some "runs" stags on the body on some areas after almost 4 months of hard work and its still not finished SIGH !!!  It was going to be above 100 degrees all this week starting today. I am really discouraged about it and not wishing to strip it all down and start over due to the flumes and cost of the paints and paint strippers.  I don't know what I will do now.....   I guess I can purchase the Lionel Commodore Vanderbilt Hudson # 18045 or others to pull the Williams 15 inch aluminum cars as I think the cars would look good behind the CV Hudson and rename the cars to "New York Central" but after checking e-bay for them and found sellers are asking for more than I can afford to pay.  Would this Lionel CV Hudson be good choice for this train, I am trying to create (Postwar style streamliner passenger train) ? SIGH !!!!!!!!!!  Last Friday that my brother passed away at 75 from heart attack and was dead for 8 days before the apt maintenance man found him lying on floor in his apt as the L.A. County sheriffs dept. called us last Friday.  My brother lived at this apt for 20 years.

Tiffany, I'm sorry to hear about your brother. Many years ago I went through the same with my sister.

Now Tiffany, this doesn't sound like you. GIVING UP!!!! You owe it to the old gal to finish her. It's just a set back. Remember, I gave you that engine (less $13.50) so you must finish her. You've done so much fine work on it and made her beautiful. Take a couple of days off, rest and do the right thing by her. You'll be glad you did. Don

Hello Don.

I have been thinking this evening about how to fix the problem and I might have found a way to fix it. I think I can"lightly" sand the affected areas (about 1/4 inch long) and recoat it as I just have to deal with 3 affected spots.  I think it will turn out ok after thinking about it for while.  I will try to take pictures of "before and after" affected areas.  If it turns out great then I will be glad to finish it !!!  I just need to replace the gearbox with the better NWSL gearbox and pair of engineer/ fireman figures with seats, paint the driver centers silver then its finished.  I really didn't give up but of course it was a set back and felt like giving up though.  I just LOVED that shining silver Hudson.  I do want to finish that old lady.   My brother and I never gotten along as he was a bully to me and a expert in guns too.  I am just glad its over.  When the police filed the death report and send me a copy list of his items by e-mail, his guns were missing !!!

Don , thank you for your kind words, it really helped !!!

Hello guys and gals......

I sand down the affected areas of the body but sprayed a short shot on the areas but some how it came out dull finish instead of gloss as said on the spray can so this made the problem worse. I guess the spray clear coat is defective and means I will have to go to another auto parts store and purchase another clear coat of the same thing and those spray cans are expensive at 7.99 per can sigh.   Few weeks ago I added the pick up rollers assembly and axle wipers for ground pick up, painted the bearing caps of the tender trucks and the trailing truck of the engine silver and installed the simple Williams "true blast II" sound in tender.  Here are the pictures guys, still not happy with the paint job mess !!
