You would need to do a motor swap with a double reduction type motor. Not hard to do.

The gearing and drivers on your motor are probably something like this.

Too bad these had the "fat tire" on them.

Do you have a source for the double reduction motor and is there any particular brand/type that you recommend? 

I was toying with the idea of using the innards of a trolley to do what I want, but decided that, since my modification skills are limited, to forego that route.

By the way, the train I have really runs great using a MRC techII transformer but not worth a hoot with a Lionel. Go figure.

Marx 666's & 1666's can be found real cheap and will have a DR motor. Most will have a smoke unit that will need to be removed and the front motor support will need to be swapped with your existing motor. A screw driver & a pair of pliers is about all you would need.
