Marquee Restoration

As part of the marquee restoration, the original plan was to include a vertical element but that was the postponed for various reasons. The membership of the Holly Historical Commission, and the Holly Planning Committee all approved the project.

The need to better identify the building as the Detroit Model Railroad Club prompted a revival of this uncompleted project. Members Mike and Marvin constructed the mockup shown in the photo, the mockup was taken down for more discussion.  This mockup is plywood, with a paper covering.  The final sign will be made from sheet metal.

The Detroit Model Railroad Club is Michigan’s largest 2-Rail Scale Club Layout, Founded on January 19, 1935.  We have about 55 scale miles of track, about 6700 feet.

Gary,

The mockup looks great!  It certainly shows what is going on inside.  Congratulations are in order!

As an aside, I am aware of some of the problems resting an old theater.  Our daughter's former art teacher has been involved trying to restore the old Penn Theater in Butler as was done in nearby Zelienople with theirs.  Numerous roadblocks, but they finally got the marquee restored and lit, even though the building can't be occupied yet.

Never even knew there was a club like this in Detroit, which isn't to far from where we live in Kokomo, Indiana.   Definatly going to have to visit when your club has an open house.  Wonder if anything still survives down in the Indianapolis area?  I know there used to be a club and a portable layout.  But I have heard the owner of the portable layout isnt well health wise and a new home for that layout might be needed.  I would love to see a 2 rail club down here in Indiana.   Mike

Graduated, emphasis on model club, better use of vertical justification in two sizes of text plane. Especially the tall side

The reverse crossbucks & background would be more effective if larger , but the limited size weakens the division effect and readabiliy. I'd keep its dark background.

Just a thought

Hi Adriatic / Thank-you for doing this excellent illustration. / I like your thought.

1. What software did you use to make this illustration?

2. What is the name of the font that you used?

3. Is the 'C' a different font from the rest in 'CLUB'

We also have an architectural rendering of the front of the building, showing the new marquee.

The Holly Hotel is one block south of the DMRRC, and is the most historic and beautiful structure in town.       http://hollyhotel.com/     110 Battle Alley   Holly, MI 48442   248-634.5208

Gary,  I just tossed it together in a few minutes.

It might be a lower case typo(?), but should be the same font. Eyeballed it, its not accurate.

Not really a "good" graphics program, just an android app; "Phonto". The font was sort of close to times roman serif, I grabbed the 1st similar I saw.

That gradient changes as the type grows too...Ie, a greater point difference at the smaller. B=90pt L= 80pt U=69pt C=57pt.   L=56pt E= 45pt etc etc.

I never got to see the final results of my only professional screen work for baking. I really hoped they would let me know it was ready, but it didn't happen.  I was running another business that was doing great, and got out of the trade soon after, but it's still fun to play around with it sometimes. The best work is seldom from one person input imo.
