I bought A Marx Mercury wind up with a whistle mechanism I'm new to collecting old toy trains, and I don't want to break the Merc by over winding it, so how many clicks do you wind up your Merc. The info is much appreciated. Here are some photos of it (sorry for the poor camera work). I'm new to posting on forums so don't be surprised the work is bad.

I'm no expert, as I got a couple of my first wind ups recently. I read somewhere to count turns for all the way, then wind one less.
never had a wind up, but if they are like a wind up clock, I wind mine slowly, and you can tell when the spring is getting tight.
The advise from caa is pretty good. Wind it up once counting the turns until it is tight. From then on, do one or two turns less. Be advised that each motor will be a little different. In time, you will get a "feel" for when it is wound without stressing it.
