Have a Marx FT Diesel that came to a grinding halt today.  Reversing became erratic, unit began to run more slowly and started to overheat.  Finally stopped altogether.

So far:

- have checked all wiring

- cleaned commutator and checked brushes

- replaced e-unit

- checked for broken wiring on motor armature

Result: motor will not run on track, but will jerk to life briefly when power is applied directly to brush holders.

There appears to be a short somewhere, but where is it?  Is there something potentially wrong with the field coil and/or armature?

Is there any hope or reviving this motor?

Have you checked the continuity of the commutator poles to adjoining poles? I just had a motor where the center connection below the commutator face opened up.

Do not apply power directly to the brushes. The field winding must be in the circuit for the motor to run.

I have had Marx reverse units go bad and have never been able to fix one, mostly because I have not been able to remove one from the motor frame.
