You don't say what number the engine is. A 999 I am guessing based on the cars you mention.
I would not attempt to put a value to it without good pictures to determine the value.

The cars make it sound like a #999 out of a #25000 3/16th set. Set # can vary if
there is something different about the contents, to #25XXX, but these sets are very
common. Value depends on condition, is it in the original box, any difference to it?
Actually, with two "box" cars, it might be a different set (Dept. Store special), OR,
more likely, previous owner added a car to it. A different engine than #999, that is,
one of the stamped steel ones, would make it an older set and more interesting.
Wow, 44 drive wheels!!!!
Wow, 44 drive wheels!!!!
What radius track would you use with an engine that had 44 drive wheels?
I was assuming you meant a 2-4-2 wheel arrangement, which Marx made in several
engines.....stamped steel ones, and the cast #999, 666, and 1666. These last two
are rarely found with those cars, as an original set.....but...occasionally.
Ha! Love the tag, 'rado!
