Stop by my local Menards today to stock up on a few things with their 11% sale going on. To my surprise they are getting the Christmas toys out already which includes their O gauge trains. A little of everything boxcars, buildings and flatcars with new loads.

I picked up this new flatcar with pickup truck bodies.

Train are a seasonal item for Menards.

'Tis the season.  It's that simple.

dcam88,

I was at the Peoria store last Saturday to rent their pickup truck & get mulch but I didn’t see any train related models during my visit. Where do they display these O-Gauge models in the store?

Thanks,

Over by the Halloween merchandise across from the checkouts.

Menard's seems to have started from ground zero fairly recently into trains, and have

come on very quickly, including adding stores.  Store additions take a lot of market

research, review of the competition, real estate acquisition!!,  etc.  I have watched them grow stores rapidly, and trains are new.  I am surprised they have gotten so far so fast, with interesting model buildings sourced overseas, etc.  We shall all watch with interest.

I was a week early last week when I ran up to our closest store about 30 minutes away, because nothing was out yet though "in stock". I called last night and got some excellent customer service over the phone, and was told to check in after 12 the next day and it would all be out (well, what they had so far). Sure enough it was, and I was able to pick a couple of the empty flats, a few Denver Die Cast, and something unseen before -a Pennsy flat with a covered tarp load which also had chain on it (I really really hope we see more of these - Nickel Plate please!).

I'm really impressed, and for $40 I'm thrilled I can add to my railroad at a very reasonable price. Looking forward to what is coming, and really happy Menard's is filling a spot for those of us who aren't scale, and don't have deep pockets.

dcam88,

Thanks for the lead. I visited the store last night & found the isle with the trains. They did have a lot of selection for train cars & some starter sets, all in 3-rail but I knew that from following the discussion on these forums. There were also a lot of choices for 1:43 scale vehicles, few 1:48 scale vehicles & some 1:64 scale vehicles but there weren’t a lot of choices for buildings / structures.

I mainly buy 2-rail models, more specifically modern intermodal cars & grain hopper models & highly detailed 1:50 scale vehicles & so I didn’t buy any of Menard’s train models during my visit. But I plan to stop by that isle every time I visit the store to see if there are any new structures or accessories that I could use.

These are just my opinion,

Thanks,

They are still setting up the display in Janesville, WI (the shelf layout diagram was taped up yet, boxes in the aisle).  I did pickup 2 boxcars (Wi Central and Rail Box).  The checkout lady had to force them into the computer, they were so "new" to them.

I would hope that Menards has the insight to carry a train section year round in their stores.

The Menards flat cars filled the prescription for me. Our seasonal display is going to incorporate a lot of toy & "goofy" loads, and the $7.99 flats (before rebate) were perfect, especially in the unadvertised 8-pack, snagged the last one from the shelf today, and put the rebate paper in the mailbox.

I inspected each car when I got home, and have no complaints. It's obviously not a $60 flat car, but I wouldn't expect that for $8. Pulled fine, couplers worked fine, no issues/damage or otherwise cause for concern. All is well.

I did see the pennsy tarped load, almost hooked me on that one, but I had the other half of the War Department with me...so I only left with an 8 pack of flats.
Mark- Please tell the corporate guys that I am quite pleased.
